How to build pectorals without a bench or barbell - 22 February 2005 22:34
Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone knows how to build the pectorals without a bench or barbell. I have a pair of dumbells though, and maybe some inverted push-up positions. I have tried everything. I tried as many push-up positions as I can find, even from higher surfaces, but I can only feel the pressure on my biceps. I have tried different positions using the dumbells, but I failed.

If anyone knows, please help. It will be greatly apprecieated.

Wide grip dips are the king of exercises in my opinion for packing mass onto the chest. Try dipping inbetween two tables. Have you not got anything to lie back on whilst you perform DB chest press? Pressups with a weighted pack on your back will also be quite beneficial.

Yep dips all the way.
Stop moaning about the size of your biceps. You want them bigger? Then eat more.

ok. So for a push-up, I will get a bag and fill it with stuff. So how will this effect my chest? (I am saying this as asking, not as in "oh yer, thats gonna help")

as the guys say dips are the first choice but if that aint possible i would do push ups as they are replicating the bench. u just need to add weight on to ur back until u can only push between say 5-12 reps depending on wat ur goals are

I have found there are 2 types of push ups. 1st is when you have your arms at shoulder width - these hit my tris more than chest.
2nd is when you have your arms slightly wider than your shoulders and ever so slightly behind your shoulders (if you see what I mean) - these hit my chest, especially when I put my feet up on the sofa.

Just what I have found from trial and error...

Pressups, dips between two chairs, incline/decline pressups with your hands or feet on your sofa and the other end on the floor.
The day you underestimate your opponent, is the day you get one of these:

with pressups and dips how do you make your pecks fatique before your shoulders, i do loads of pressups for my kickboxing and i do disp sometimes but my pecs are hardly involved atall, all my power comes from my shoulders.

kickboxer i think its just a case of gettting the technique right. i do dips on the landing with my feet in the airing cupboard to get a lean forward.
do you have a coffee table you could use as a bench?

I have a glass coffe table, and is not very strong... I have a table, although it is a bit wide. Ill try to make something out of it.

oh, and how do you perform dips correctly? Maybe I can use it on my extra width "bench"!

For chest: wide grip, elbows flared, lean forward, legs back, look up.
For triceps: narrow grip, elbows in, stay upright.

flared elbows, just means make sure they're sticking out (necessary to place emphasis on the chest)
