Thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive reply. Looks like your way of training if obviously working for you. Jimbo

Saturday 5th March start 12:15 Deadlift, no straps, pause between each rep, controlled descent. 70K x 12 150K x 8 190K x 5 225K x 3 240K x 1 240K x 1 240K x 1 190K x 5 Dumbbell concentration curl 25K x 10 x 3 This last one may surprise you, I do it if deadlifts only are done as I feel that deadlifts alone don't fully work the bicep, if another rowing exercise were done, eg barbell bent row, then curls would be un-necessary and therefore dropped. End 13:15

Monday 7th March Chest start 16:55 Flat bench: 20k x 20 60k x 12 100k x 8 115k x 5 125k x 3 145k x 1 145k x 1 145k x 1 120k x 5 End 17.20 Ripped through it tonight, felt really good. Had planned to do 3 x 142.5 but was going so well that I upped it to 145. There are those who believe that on a good day you should really push it and see what you can do. I tend not to do this as it can adversely affect confidence the following week. So maybe I sold myself a little short on the physical side, but I did myself a power of good mentally. Just look at that finish time, I'll be home, fed and watered in time for the Simpsons. Life can be good some days.

Wednesday 9th March Legs - start 17:00 Light one tonight, every so often I have one of these, usually one a month just to give the muscles a run out whilst at the same time giving my old bones an extra weeks rest. I consider them essential. Squat: 70k x 5 70k x 5 120k x 5 160k x 5 190k x 5 190k x 5 190k x 5 190k x 5 190k x 5 End 17:40 due to much shorter rest times between last five sets. Back on course next week with 230k

SHK, thanks for the kind words, just wish it was a little easier though, still progress is being made. JohnovManchester - absolutley, it's the little things at matter most, it don't take much to make an old man happy. Monday - 14th March. start 16:50 Flat bench: 20k x 20 100k x 8 120k x 5 130k x 3 150k x 1 150k x 1 150k x 1 122.5k x 5 After last weeks heroics I decided to skip 147.5 and jump directly to 150k and it went well, the first two were a doddle, but the third was noticeably harder, not too much, but it was noticeable. From next week the increments will be 2.5k as originally planned. End 17:30 with a feeling of a job well done.

Wednesday 16th March Legs, start 16:55 Squat: 80k x 5 80k x 5 130k x 5 180k x 5 230k x 5 230k x 5 230k x 5 End 17:35 First two sets at 230 went well, but during the third set I got a real sharp headache over my right eye. So there was no way I was carrying on with that so off I went. By the time i had changed it was 80 percent better and by the time I had driven home it was gone. Feel tip top this morning. Can't recall that happening before. Still, progress was made, three good sets were completed, and next week is only six days away.

Probably a rush of blood pressure, it happens with heavy squats, just one of the things that comes with the territory. Keep plugging away big guy, your lifts are very impressive!

Cheers Dodgeball, thanks for that, I wasn't too worried but I didn't know what caused it.

Thursday 17th March, start 16:55 Smith machine military press 20k x 20 50k x 5 60kx 5 70k x 5 80k x 5 85k x 5 85k x 5 85k x 5 85k x 5 85k x 5 End 17:35 SpongeBob - just over twenty five years, but for many years I was a ship without a rudder, big improvement came about five years ago when I changed gyms and went from being a big fish in a little pond to a medium sized fish in a big pond. But the big improvement came on that happy day when I first squatted with Little A, he is the rudder I had previously lacked. Always remember you are never too old to learn, and no matter how much you know there are always people who either know more, or who know things that you don't. Seek out this people, they are generally only too happy to share their knowledge. The key is to keep an open mind. Take for example Little A's advice above. I really can't see it doing any good, but I am prepared to give it a go.

Why do you use the smith machine for military press? Seems a strange choice, surely a free weight would stress the stabilising muscles better and also help to improve form.

Dodgeball, fair comment. But in practise I found that during standing military press, I was leaning way too far over backward, and seated with a free bar is not an option with the equipment available to me. So seated Military press on a Smith machine seem the only sensible alternative, and over the years I have grown to quite enjoy them. It is the only exercise that I use the Smith machine, except maybe the occaisional shrug. In general I prefer free weights to machines, but this, in my opinion, is one where the machine scores over the free bar. You were quite right to mention it though, good spot. On my way to deadlift now, things to pick up, things to put down, you know how it is. The question now is should I do 247.5 or 250K. I'll let you know.
