Right on the money there old chap. However Fat Pete's book "powerlifting for fat folk" would run thus:

Chapter 1 : Train hard
Chapter 2 : Eat a lot
Chapter 3 : Sleep well

It wouldn't sell many. But If I add another five hundred pages, by vastly complicating simple things people would flock to it

There is a moral there for us all

Make sense? Wether the improvent is attributed to just your psychology or the actual training it doesn't matter.

Bad luck on missing the 175 bench Fat Pete... Out of interest, do you pause all your reps, do you compete and are you clean? [Don't have to answer all of those and I'm sorry if I should already know the answers]

I have to admit that I am one of those giddy people who chase 1RM's and single sets, but as an OL thats my job, my enjoyment and my excuse, and I'm sticking to it

After training with Fat Pete for more than the odd workout, I can tell you the secret of his training. There is no secret. The guy has a plan and sticks to it like sh1t to a blanket. Motorway closed, late to gym? sqts 5x5. Struck by lightening? sqts 5x5. Caught up in armed robbery and had both knee caps blown out? sqts 5x5. His strength (much to my annoyance) is his unwaivering, and some would say boring, persistence. Part of me would love to train like that, part of me just wouldnt see any enjoyment in it. I suspect I'm not alone in this. For that reason the majority of us will just look at Fat Pete and wonder whilst the remainder will stay locked up in their straight jackets

Big Tom, ask away old chap, my soul is always open to those who care to look.

I don't compete, although certain forces are trying to convince me to in light of my age, mainly because I never really thought that much about it, but now my thoughts have turned that way I have to say I am appalled by the attitude to drugs in sport. It now transpires that almost every drug known to man enhances performance in some way, and whilst I don't take what the public at large would call "drugs" I don't live the pharmaceutically pure existance the tossers who run the sport seem to thing I should. When these oafs stop wasting millions on out of season testing and put that money into encouraging young talent, then maybe. But as it stands now , unlikely. Recreational activites should be fun, and these morons have removed it all for competitive people, so that is no place for fat Pete. Life's too short.

The above is a cut and paste from earlier in this journal and covers both the competition and drugs aspect to your question. As to the pause aspect, no i don't. I strive for a controlled movement throughout so that the bar just touches the chest then away. But I don't actually pause. Mainly because I never thought to, and if you don't compete, why would you. Considering the trouble I have benching "touch and go" style I reckon pausing is some way off. Thanks for the interest though, if memory serves me right you are no mean lifter yourself.

Cheers SB, thanks for that. It would appear that Veganlifter and Little A have their finger on the pulse, and have discovered my secret. What they hadn't realized is that I didn't know what it was, but I do now. I will strive to become duller than ever. Cheers Chaps.

Thanks for the answers Pete. You could always lift in one of the untested federations if you wanted to, but you'd be up against people taking all sorts (and I don't mean liquorice)

On another note, It's my birthday on Wednesday and I shall be 29. Like you I shall still train though! Squat and deadlift... super!

On yet another note, I'm surprised you weren't called George!

Monday 25th April

Chest, start 14:00

Flat bench
20k x 20
70k x12
102.5k x 8
125k x 5
140k x 3
160k x 1
160k x 1
160k x 1
125k x 5

Close grip bench 100k x 10 x 2

So we're off and running once more, the three 160s went well and in view of where the 175 stalled it may be prudent to include a few close grips. The first set was a breeze but the second one emptyed the tank.

End 15.10

Hey Pete, I know Andy is probably nagging you to compete but I really think you should mate. I'm not sure what age you become a master but I was at the BPO British the other week and I'm sure you would have walked away with a trophy for your weight class mate. As you may or may not know, I entered my first comp this year after years of just training and wondering what I wanted to do etc. and to be honest, I wish I'd done it years ago. I'm sure your mate Andy has loads of advice to give you so if I were you, I'd give it a go and start collecting some trophies.

You would do some serious damage in the masters 2 (over 50's) next year for sure.

Tell you what, book yourself in for a comp. let me know when and where and I'll enter too! Perfect chance to meet my hero!

Right, I'm back.

Westie, close grips are done with my hands on the inner limits of the knurling, so the whole of my hand is on the knurl, and the inside of the forefingers are flush with the start of the central smooth part.

Robt, I did know that you had entered a comp and done rather well for a first time, (Little A quotes this as part of his nagging) I also know that you equalled my 275 kg squat, which is excellent news. But please be aware that when the current 5 x 5 cycle end, which is soon, I'll be looking to raise my own 1RM. So if you feel someone pulling on your shirt tails, it might just be me. But I can't see me matching your 800K total this summer. Good luck with it though, I only doubt my own abilities, I don't doubt yours.

Jonnymills, our paths will cross sooner or later, and I consider it more likely that I'll be watching you in a comp rather than the other way round.

Hey Pete, I started back on the old 5x5s this week with my squats. I've been doing a lot of doubles and singles recently and it's been causing me to have sore joints so my thinking is that another 6 weeks or so on the 5x5s should help reduce the strain on the joints and tendons - and hopefully make them a little stronger.

Good luck with the new 1RM, you going to go for the big 300??
