I have used this type of workout on and off for more than 15 years now. Basically it works for me but as Midget Motivator points out you realy need to listen to your body and know when to back off and how to cycle workouts to keep things positive. I often don't have a training partner so don't use the forced reps too often just simple drop sets reducing the weight on the bench press for example by 5-10kg each time for anywhere from 3 - 6 drops. Some days I use a rest pause as well where I rack the weight breath deeply 5 times then go again. I often use the pre exhaust approach but sometimes simply prioratise a body part for strength training by doing the heavy compound movemnets first. I never have a pre determined workout in mind when I head for the gym beyond which body parts I will train but go entierly on instincts. This summer after a long lay off of almost 6 months I used these methods and dropped 8kg while my strength continued to increase coupled with a careful diet plan I feel I am in pretty good shape for a 39 year old, as my abs are begining to show through again. I should also mention I try to keep the reps in the 4-6 range but, again sometimes I mix it up a little if the mood takes me but never more than 8-10 reps while aiming to increase the weight I use or get an extra rep on every workout.

If you follow any structured training routine and combine it with correct rest and diet you will grow and be stronger anyway. I fail to see the benefits of having your training buddy doing half of the work for you.

You were 17 and just over 10 stone when you started your journal so to be fair you would have experienced good results on any program. As you couldnt handle it for longer than a month then it is fair to say that it was not a very effective program for you.
