Wayne Pickering sadly took his own life on Wednesday 21st January 2009. Wayne had a number of issues which lead him to be depressed; unfortunately we, his friends, didn't realise the extent of his depression.
Wayne was a great bodybuilder and trained with such enthusiasm. He won the NABBA Mr England in 2000. Since then he had toyed with the idea of competing again, and although he never did, he did always keep in great shape. Wayne was also very fit and enjoyed sessions of cardiovascular training.
I first met Wayne in Ultra Bodies Gym, Kettering around 12 years ago; indeed, I do remember my first encounter with him was over working-in with each other during cable preacher curls. Shortly afterwards we became buddies, and 3-4 years ago we became really close friends.
Originally a painter and decorator (Wayne painted my house!); Wayne turned his hand to personal training and deep tissue massage. As a personal trainer he helped many people lose fat, gain muscle and acquire a physique they were proud of. Moreover, he trained his clients with such passion, that the workouts were enjoyable and fun. Couple this with his great sense of humour and people really looked forward to training with him.
Some have suggested Wayne had 'healing hands'. He would help massage and manipulate many a joint back to full health. Even if a bodybuilder was injury-free, Wayne would improve muscular separation which was ideal for pre-competition preparation.
Wayne was also a keen boxer, especially in his younger days. He enjoyed a good sparring session right up until recent months. It's also not so commonly known that Wayne was also a great drummer and had played in a couple of bands over the years.
Since his death, the amount of people who have had positive things to say about Wayne has been overwhelming. Sadly, Wayne didn't realise just how many people cared about him.
RIP Wayne; I hope you've found happiness. You'll truly be missed by many.
