question for any staffy owners/experts..... 06 February 2012 13:40 (permalink)
I have two staffs, one male and female, the male has just turned one and the big girl is five yrs old, I have them on good food, plenty of water and the usual bones now and again. My question is in regards to amount of miles per day to walk them, I take them on a 5mile walk in the mornings which includes a few hills nothing to steep, and a second 2 mile walk in the afternoon which is downhill for a mile and then obviously uphill for a mile coming back, is this too much? enough? or not enough???? it's just the wee man especially, is full of beans all day, now I know he's a pup and gona be hyper to a certain extent, but are they getting enough exercise?? someone told me a pup's (up to 18mths) exercise time per day is, in my Marley's case (12mths) 60mins per day, equivalent to 5mins for every month of there puppy days........true? or loada balls???? The 5mile walk takes us roughly 1hr 10mins and the 2 mile walk about half hr what do you guys/girls think?   thanks

i would probably be a bit concerned for the young one as he's still developing and the miles maybe too high

do you own some staffs yourself lost?  what sort of mileage would you suggest then the 2mile walk I normally do maybe twice a day just totaling 4mile a day rather than the 7 they're currently walking?

Don't own Staffies but have and will continue to own Airedales, larger more active (potentially) than a staffie but due to both being muscular dogs similar practice should apply when regards to walking a puppy/young muscular breed and that is until they are fully developed you can over exercise, this depends on breed an Airedale its 2 years (physically) you'd need to find out the age for your breed, you build walks/exercise up until that time when you can increase greatly then on in.

For example a young Airedale (3months) will be walked a few hundred yards a day then increase this each month up to about a mile at 9-12 months, then onwards and upwards from there. You should also limit their free play off the lead when young too.

Not saying if you don't follow this you'll have problems and hip dysplacia I would think is less common in a staffie but over developing their musculature at a very young age will do them no favours.

I'll take my dog somewhere I can let him off the lead so he can have a good charge around, after dogs / squirrels / anything really.
He probably runs about 5 miles while I walk about 2! I know that doesn't really answer your question about staffies but it might save you having to walk so far with them! Just make sure they're safe to be let off the lead first!

I like doing the walks too mate, burns some amount of calories walking two staffies for 7-8mile a day! lol theres nowhere close to me to let them off the lead without there always being other dogs about.

had a staffie for 15 yrs. mine would go for massive walks you just have to be a bit careful when their young and growing as they can have joint problems

I agree with going somewhere they can go off lead, my female staff loves it offlead with other dogs, and can then go at her own pace, about 1-1.5 hours off lead and shes tired enough to be nice and calm when we get home

                        Honestly dont know about distance
