My grip strength improved due to handling heavy dumbbells as well as from chinning/pullups. Through in some grip work at the end of the session to improve your grip strength.
Re:gripping barbell when lifting heavy (nwalsh011)

 Chalk all the way

Re:gripping barbell when lifting heavy (uncle_peter)

I found that my grip got stronger by only using the straps at the point of failure. When I was using straps all the time my grip strength was really bad. Just to add I never use gloves anymore.

Re:gripping barbell when lifting heavy (dirtyvest)

If you've never tried chalk then that's definately your main starting point, that will make a difference. I used to but haven't specifically trained grip for a few years now and can still comfortably hold on to my max DL weight double over hand (never used mixed as I don't get on with it, or my back doesn't).

I often use a semi-hiooked grip. My index finger crosses over my thumb but not my middle finger, that really fcuking hurts.

Re:gripping barbell when lifting heavy (just t)

iaink

You've got to work slowly into a hook grip. I've never missed a deadlift due to a grip issue in a very long time. Mind you a set of 10 is CV but there you go.
Re:gripping barbell when lifting heavy (wolves1)

Straps- grip is always going to give before the back is exhausted otherwise

Re:gripping barbell when lifting heavy (MMA4life)

As said before, Liquid Chalk and Stuff like static holds (hanging from a chin-up bar with a weight belt or holding a loaded olympic bar for time)

MMA4life

Re:gripping barbell when lifting heavy (just t)

i just wear straps for reps.
Re:gripping barbell when lifting heavy (Girth)

Packup Pete

Have a look at some of the exercises on here too mate

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/drobson78.htm

Pinch gripping, towel chins and static holds are esp effective.

Thanks

will have a read of that in abit . it looks good
Re:gripping barbell when lifting heavy (Packup Pete)

Have a look at some of the exercises on here too mate

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/drobson78.htm

Pinch gripping, towel chins and static holds are esp effective.
Re:gripping barbell when lifting heavy (iaink)

 Ohh yeah.. forgot mixed grip!
