steroids effect on tendons

As I sit with a ruptured achilles tendon I have tried to find any proof that anabolic steroids have a negative effect on tendons. The first question the consultant asked was do I take steroids .I know tendon injuries are quite common among strength athletes but is that due to the steroids or would it of happened anyway.

Impossible to say whether your tendon rupture would have happened regardless of your steroid use but yes, some steroids can have a negative effect on collagen synthesis and the patterns in which it is deposited.

The weak link will always break if you overload it. Point being that muscle strength can increase much quicker than tendon strength on cycle.

Yeah I was thinking more long term weakening of tendon rather than due to over loading .In my case I was not under any great load .but have taken steroids on and off for 20+ yrs!!!

Yes Var is good - I seem to recall it was used in studies of burns victims. Also heard of people using alongside peps for injuries.

    This.

Steroids will lead to rapid strength gains, and tendons etc cannot keep pace.  so the majority of steroids dont negatively effect tendons, they just give you the ability to get stronger muscles much more rapidly than tendon strength can increase..

I agree .Muscles get stronger and tendons don't get stronger at the same rate to keep up with strength gains in the short term. But I would be interested  in the bigger picture, do steroids have a negative effect on collagen and actually make them weeker and more likely to fail in the long term? From my own experience of a rutured pec ,quad and now achilles tendon im either unlucky or it may be down to steroids !!

I've been doing a bit of searching on this over the last couple of days.  I've got hypermobile joints which means I pick up tweaks and strains a lot.  This is what I read by typing in anavar tendons and anavar ligaments:

Test inhibits collagen synthesis, so do have a negative effect on tendons (to what degree I'm not sure.  Winny increases this but the tendon growth is brittle by comparison as the crosslinks between the fibres is reduced so makes things worse.  Deca & anavar have a positive effect on collagen sythesis and shold help build them as well as skeletal muscle.

I'm not taking this as gospel - what are people's thoughts - think most of the above that I've paraphrased was on elitefitness.  Could be tempted to try a 'var only cycle to test the waters with AAS if it has less of a negative effect on my joints instead of the standard TEST at 500mg a week

I never use my indicators, I don't like people kowing what I'm up to
