sweet potatoe , chicken breasts, brown rice and steak. Cook a night before or week? 13 November 2011 15:50 (permalink)
Iv'e just bought some sweet potatoes . Ive never cooked them or ate them.

how can I cook them? and make them taste nice , bare in mind im bulking.

I usually grill my chicken breasts but they turn out to be pretty burnt and hard on the outside and undercooked from inside but they've always tasted fine. I normally just wash them and grill them plain.

what other ways could I cook my chicken breats? I heard boiling or steaming your food eradicates alot of the good nutriets?

also im at college monday to friday during the day .
so do you think its worth making for the entire 5 days at once or just make before every night for each day.

my main foods which i will need every day are
brown rice
chicken breast
lamb steak(leg piece)
sweet potatoe

please give me advice and tips how I can make this easy for my self?

I use my george foreman grill for meats and pan fry steak or use the oven for chicken etc

You can boil chicken but be warned it will taste like sh!t and If you are wanting to keep it for a few days it will get drier and drier.

I use my casserole dish for beef or chicken in a low fat sauce with veg and take it with me to work for the next few days just warm it up.

I would use any cooked food up within 3/4 days mate in the fridge. I always eat it all within 2/3 days but that's just me aka fat bastard.

I always love chicken soup with brown rice in it and loads of greens. Just boil the chicken before you add it to the chicken stock or you'll have white bits in the soap. You can add anything you like just look it up on the net it's so easy to make. Keeps for days and gives you everything you need to keep you going.

Cooked sweet potato starts to go funny after a few days but brown rice will keep for a week or so I just eat it cold with some meat.

I cook my foods the day before and reheat at work adding Peri Peri hot sauce, chicken I normally just oven although sometimes on the George Forman grill, all meals that require carbs I have Basmati Brown Rice. I would love to have Sweet Potato at work but apparently you should only eat sweet potato (and normal potato) straight from the oven and not to be eaten at a later date whether cold or reheated, it was expained to me once but I forget the exact reason but something to do with losing it's nutritional value and how your body processes it... so for that reason I always go with rice.

A George Foreman is a great investment. I use mine for the meat and then the veg- asparagus is good grilled. I'm considering a rice cooker too.  Cooking rice can be abit of a ball ache.

I cook my chicken in oven bags and it lasts 4-5 days in the fridge.  Can get 10 for £1.50 from Sainsbury's.

Chop up the chicken, add a marinade or spices and chuck in the bag.  Can store in the freezer if you like and then take directly from the freezer, leave out overnight to defrost and thrown in the oven for 20-30mins.   Keeps the meat really moist, and to be honest I've boiled chicken, oven baked it,  fried it and I've found this way much easier and had better results.

Could always knock together a basic sauce and cook it in that.  Will definitely keep it moist!

Really? Seeing as I heat up sweet potato most days at work I would be interested to know more about this. It certainly still tastes delicious!

To the OP, I chop up my sweet potato into small chunks and then roast in olive oil for about 30 mins on 200 degrees C, turning a few times.

Both rice and potatoes carry an harmful bacteria if you don't store it in the fridge when it's cooled. If they are out of the fridge after 2 hours, don't eat it. Both are pretty serious as well. Rice carries bacillus cereus and potatoes clostridium botulinum.

I bought a load of microwave safe/freezer safe plastic lunch boxes. Cost a few quid for 3 or 4.

I buy a selection of chicken, minced meat, fish. What evers going cheap.

You can then go to the spice isle and buy packets of mixed spice, different flavours like Nandos rubs or Schwartz Jamaica Jerk etc. There loads to select from. I usually have one packets for 4-8 chicken breasts. Then just grill it. You could do this yourself with your spice rack but it saves time.

I then buy the cheap Sainsbury own microwave brown rice, or you could cook it up yourself. The bags are just easy and quick.

In the freezer section they carry frozen veg, like spinach etc buy a some of these, maybe some fresh veg like mushrooms

In the freezer section you also got herbs frozen, like chilli, garlic etc. I buy a few of these.

When the cooked meats cooled down I bang it in the lunchbox, add some brown rice, and frozen veg. If using microwave rice and just take it out the packet and add direct to my lunch box. When you microwave later it cooks fine. Then take the frozen herbs like garlic cube, chilli whatever you like and put it on top of the veg, might add a little salt and pepper. Then freeze it.

You microwave cook it straight from frozen with the lid lose on top, then a give it a little stir. The frozen veg cooks when you microwave it, takes around 6-8 minutes from frozen, if its half defrosted around 4 minutes.

I do this and make batches for a week. You can mix it up with different veg, prep and season your meat yourself if you want just takes longer. Sometime use, chives and spring onions. Great stuff. Chilli concarne is great for minced meat, you can use the gravy to pour on the rice and veg. Just remember to cool everything before freezing.

There's no reason for eating bland food.

Nice ideas from all the above might try a few myself.

rice cookers are good - gotta get the technique right, i prefer boil in bag brown rice cheap and very easy too.

chicken i find best fried personally - very high heat blast both sides (grill pan gives best result) for few minutes, then drop heat down and put lid on. always comes out succulent. i put qtr garlic piece in and some pepper, sometimes squeeze half a lemon and oinion, or peri peri. i got a george foreman but dont you guys find that it squeezes alot of the juices out??

as for sweet potato the only way ive done it is wedges with seasoning grilled, or whole baked plain, both really nice. i find you need a bit of oil though for both to make it cook well.

id say with all the above dont cook a week in advance - day before is best, 2/3 days max.
