switching up reps/weight 15 January 2012 21:38 (permalink)
Does this help? For example on bench im doing 5x5 which I have been doing for a while now,
if i switched to something like 3x15, would i build muscle more as I'm switching it up? Do kinda feel im stuck at the same weight for 5x5 now.

cheers

Not entirely sure whether you have listed reps/sets or sets/reps above because people tend to write them out differently, however:

1-5 reps is considered the strength range
8-12 reps are used for hypertrophy
12+ (that sort of area) are generally used for endurance purposes

You'd do better to swap to either an 8 rep or 10 rep based set than a 15 rep set, if you're after hypertrophy; that's not to say that other rep ranges don't give some degree of hypertrophy, because there is always a percentage of crossover within the varying ranges, but 8-10 reps appears to give more bang for buck where hypertrophy is concerned.

If you've plateaued then you need to manipulate intensity and/or volume. I'd be inclined to increase reps for a while then come back to your 5x5. Your rep volume at the moment is obviously 25 reps, so 4x8 (32) or 3x10 (30) would be a reasonable adjustment.

weights every other day and do some type crossfit style circuit cardio on non weight training day every 5th day.

So 3 days on 1 off.

                -weights
                -cardio
                -weights
                -off
                REPEAT
