chavhunter do you live near any leisure centers with gyms? You can get a stretch card for £14 a month [if you get a max card - £2 a year] which includes everything - gym, raquet sports, classes, pool etc. You can also use any leisure center owned by the council, not only the one you registered at.

Thats the deal in Wales not sure about England though

Igo to Bannatynes in Newport. I was initially a bit unsure, expecting 30k dumbells max and 1 barbell.. but, alas, its alot better than I expected!

The building is pretty new, only about 2 years old. Theres shedfull's of cardio equipment, and a very good selection of free weights, a power rack, smith machine, 4 benches, loads f dumbells and aout 5 big barbells knocking about with plenty of weights. Changing rooms are big and always cleaned regulary, so's all the equipent. Theres only about 4 regular trainers there, its usually middle aged cardio peeps that go there which means the free weight section is always pretty empty, bonus :) (dont mean anything offensive by that, just not the 'hardcore' element of training)

A JJB opened up down the road, it is cheaper (im paying £45 pr month) but I do enjoy the steam room and its just nicer where i am. The JJB was rammed with chavs.... I nearly caught on fire with all that Adidas tracksuit static so I decided against that one.

All in all, it seems that Bannatynes are different wherever you go, but if its a newer one, you maybe laughing :)

that sounds really good, but there's nowhere like that where i am. infact theres not a lot of anything where i am!!

grrrrrrr its bad enough that they hang around outside public places, but to actually have the audacity to come inside aswell??? surely they have better things to spend their dole money on. like an education perhaps

It's probably a bit too far from you but there's a council-run gym at Hartsdown Park in Margate, I think it's on a pay-per-use basis

I don't think you can make a sweeping statement like TT has made. I'm a member of one of the Living Well clubs that is now bannatynes. I use two of the clubs. As I also use the one near to my partners when I am at hers. There is a marked difference between the clubs. One being absolutely fine and one being ****e.

You need to ask yourself what you want from a club before making a decision. A Bannatynes is not going to have anywhere near the type of equipment you'll get in a good 'hardcore' gym.

Its horses for courses.

Just for the record: went and had a look round the bannatynes and jjb today. jjb was about twice the size, had much more up to date equipment and was less crowded. bannatynes have a 12 month minimum contract which cannot be suspended when im at home (i.e. out of term time). bannatynes is £40 a month, JJB is £19.95. Decisions decisions eh....?

i really need to change this name, seems to be giving people the wrong idea...

the pool was really nice, about 20 meters in length and 4ft deep all the way along with 2 hot spas at the end.
