any vw passat owners with push button handbrakes - experiencing a problem 27 January 2009 17:25 (permalink)
[The author of this thread provided 5 reward points for the best answer]
purchased a vw passat 55 model 3 months ago for 6k

the passat has a push button handbrake

for the last few days i have been getting a "parking brake fault" signal on the screen

and i have 3 warning lights coming on

(1) the EPC light which has something to do with the petrol engine apparently

(2) the yellow P with a line through it which i gues implies parking brake fault

(3) the little yellow car with squiggly lines indicating skidding (another i am told is to do with the parking brake)

has anyone had this issue and what did you do

reason i ask is i went to show this to the local vw garage and they said the abs pump needs replacing and the total for parts and labour is going to set me back 1.5k

yep, 1.5k for a car i purchased 3 months ago for 6k

my issue is, the car has an abs fault warning signal - but that light does not come on

anyone help me out here because the vw garage quoted the abs pump part as costing 1k but when i check it out online they seem to be selling (new ones mind not second hand) for £200-£300

any help would be greatly appreciated and a paltry few reward points are on offer for those interested in that sort of thing

appreciated

hi mate, so sorry to read this, i remmember you asking which car people would go for when you were looking to buy this car and i was one of the posters who said go for the passat...
i never experienced any brake faults at all with mine so cant offer any advise sorry.
the only thing i can suggest is to try and source an independant VAG specialist.
the labour cost sounds crazy but main dealers are sooo expensive by the hour so you should reduce this cost with an independant.
must be a hell of a job labour wise to warrant over a grand...
do you have any warranty from the garage that sold the vehicle ?

cant help, have an Audi A6 with push button handbrake which is prob the same, but no problems.

One idea would be to visit a VW forum and ask there.

sorry to tell you this mate but i have a 55 plate seat leon and have just had the ABS unit replaced on it before Xmas - luckily for me it was still under warranty so cost me nowt but the price you have been quoted is spot on £1500 all in. The ABS unit on that generation of VAG cars is well known for failing, type VW ABS PUMP into google and you will see what i mean...

Mine presented itself an an 'esp' fault, when diagnosed by vag-com it showed a faulty 'brake pressure sensor' which is buried in the ABS unit... Oddly ABS was still functioning on mine but the warning light would have meant an MOT failure. The warning light on mine was of the car and squiggle...

My advice is to take it to an independant VAG specialist and get them to double check.

                i'm not sure

i think we may have declined the extended warranty but the more i think about it the more i ponder whether a 1 year warranty is standard and the extended warranty is on top of that

                gonna phone em tomorrow

You should have got a decent warranty with the car mate it's only a 55 plate so in my rekoning you should have got 12 months warranty with it.

Some good advice regarding taking it to a normal garage instead of the main dealer, if the normal garage is ok and VAT registered I'd get the work done there if I were you, looking for a ABS pump is not hard, look for a local company who bring the cars in off the motorway after they've been involed in a smash, you'll get some good parts off the write offs.

I've got a Passat with the same parking button as you but upto now I've had no trouble with mine, if I do get any trouble with it I take it back to the dealer where I got it from.

I'd look at your purchase form mate and see if you've got a warranty with it.
