getting up in the middle of the night for protein 03 March 2011 16:00 (permalink)
hi,

ive just started the last few nights to set my alarm to get up and have a protein shake at 1am,i was just wondering if any one else does this/is it a good idea or bad

i can't afford to be buying casein on top of everything else i buy, and i hate cottage cheese and other similar things etc

i do add a teaspoon of evoo to my shake b4 bed at around 10pm but will that slow it down enough to last me till i'm up for work at 4am

From experience, don't bother.  The deep, consistent sleep is far more beneficial than a little extra protein.  By all means keep a shake of powder handy if you wake for the loo or something but don't disturb your sleep for a shake.  The sleep/catabolism thing is overplayed, you're awake enough to eat enough and sleep is too important for rest/recovery and growth hormones are released to a greater extent in the absence of insulin.
[simplified: food = insulin rise = growth hormone slump]

If the human body was so poorly evolved as to digest itself during resting hours, we would have died out a long time ago.

Liver glycogen is used as the energy source during sleep, it is then  replenished the next day either through food, be it carb rich or not.

would never ever do this myself, sounds horrible

i used to keep a shaker with powder in it beside my bed so i could have a shake if i happened to wake for a leak, but setting an alarm is just crazzzzzzzzzzzzy

GH production is ramped up during the deeper stages of sleep too, which doesn't happen for the first couple of hours. You'd be robbing Peter to pay Paul and ultimately setting yourself back.

so when do you compete for your national title then?

Seriously that stuff is for the guys at the top and even then its not a terribly common practice :)
