What are your thoughts on the above poster? Saying that vegetables have a higher percentage of protein than steak, chicken, fish etc.
Having a debate with someone about it as I think its a massively misleading and inaccurate poster but just after other views. Not sure if this should be in here or general. Mods feel free to move.

Isnt it just  nonsense. Correct me if Im wrong but when did beef have a higher % of protein than chicken?

just so everyone knows, the protein % is as a percentage of total calories, not as a percentage of the food.

so take cucumber for example, 100g of cucumber contains about 1g of protein, but it also only contains around 14 calories.  so even their numbers as calculated are wrong.

100g of chicken contains about 20g of protein, and about 145 calories.

so to get 20 g of protein you could either eat 100g of chicken, or 2kg of cucumber.   Now even for the most avid vegetable lover, 2kg of cucumber is pushing it!  lol

yet the figures are showing cucumber and chicken as roughly the same % protein.  if thats not misleading propeganda but out by anti-meat activists, then i dont know what is!

they are great foods, and i wouldnt hesitate to include them in any diet, but they are not valuable sources of protein.

even in a vegitarian diet, which i have zero problem with, you would need to include protein rich sources of food, and non of those are!

1g per 100g, you can pretty much count that as containing no protein, as youd have to eat so much to get anything from it in that respect it becomes unworkable.  not to mention that the protein sources in those foods arent that available, and are very incomplete!

Whoever it is thats argueing with you obviously doesnt have enough dietry knowledge to understand why its wrong.  a quick search on google for the nutritional profiles of those foods 'should' make them see how wrong they are, if they were able to understand them!

also as I said they don't contain all of the amino acids so IT WON'T MATTER IF THEY HAD A 1'000'000 GRAMS OF PROTEIN PER 100G

I can't get on Facebook 'cos I'm at work but I'm sure this is some stupid vegan spouting b*llocks.  I'm vegan myself but find this sort of thing extremely embarrassing - remember arguing with someone once who said spinach was the best source of protein available!

You're right in so far as most plant-based protein sources aren't complete, however this is irrelevant provided you eat a range of different foods in your diet.  Contrary to what some think getting adequate protein on a vegan diet is not hard.

....and judging by the responses in this thread, they are getting plenty of bites.
