If you're serious about street fighting, you need to get some underpants to wear over your trousers and a cape.

Ron Jeremy

I think the main point here is - dont street fight. You will end up either seriously hurt, or you'll go too far without meaning to and go inside for GBH or manslaughter. In my profession I've seen both many times.

If you really must fight, then do MMA. Best for MMA? Learn BJJ for groundfighting. Learn Judo or freestyle wrestling for takedowns. And learn Muay Thai for stand up. Nothing is more powerful. If you want the ultimate MA combos then thats it there.

If you just want to learn a martial art then Judo all the way. Its a full sport which bodybuilders have an advantage in providing you learn the art properly. Its got a massive competition structure going up to the olympics and its something you can grade in to gauge progress.

If you really must streetfight, nothing more than the basics in martial arts will make any difference unless you're like a 5th Dan in my opinion. If you're hard, you're hard. If you're not, you're not. Its in your head. What you can take, how aggressive AND sensible you are and more importantly, if you're LUCKY!

Krav Maga has a great aim - Cause as much damage as quickly and efficiently as you can with minimal effort.

Another main point - Fitness. If you get winded you lose. If they run out of breath first, you win. But street fights dont normally go that long.

Stay sober for focus and if you really get in trouble and have to - Do what you have to do and whats justified as quick and hard as you can possibly do it. Take out the hardest one in whatever way you need to. Balls, throat, elbow, headbutt whatever. Then as soon as you're safe, stop. Or you'll invite prison.

For training - Get as strong as you can. Get as fit as you can. Find someone who can box/kick/knee/elbow, get them to teach you basics, then punch and kick the bag in circuits and make it as fast and hard as possible over time.

BUT - Just do judo or MMA mate. Much better.

Good post
The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.

Re:Most effective for street fighting? - 27 September 2009 20:08 ( #124 )
yeah avoiding a fight always best , but i have been in a couple that couldnt been avoided

i do jujitsu and mma
fighted to guys at once one was boxer other hadnt a clue , jujitsu really helped me take two guys down without hitting them  just throws.
but krava maga is the **** man , check it on youtube , very good .
but personaly just last night i  got reached for in the neck and lapel threw him, i could of easily arm bared him, or gillotine.

basically the best thing to have going into a street fight is confidence , we are all different , so no martial art is the best its whatever your the best in , that will defend yourself

there are plenty of reality based instructors using real fighting techniques. as everyone else suggests fighting on the street is not the way to go.

do you need to improve your confidence?
do you want to learn how to defend yourself?

either way before you embark make sure you are doing if for the right reasons.

as long as your not looking to look for a row every friday night after a few beers i can put you in touch with someone just depending on where you live. as i know quite a few around the country.

THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES.

yeh im not going out looking fights lol, i just want to be able to defend myself, my friends and my family, should push come to shove.

the reason i didnt say " best for self defense" instead of street fiten is that i thought that wud avoid some of the " best self defense is avoid a fight" etc.  While this is vital information, i just meant the most effective and useful should i find myself in a certain situation.

again thanks for all the replies guys

im ex UK army where fighting is a daily occurnace.  Also a door man of some 10 years since leaving the army.

Im that time I have seen highly trained lads in JJ, boxing whatever get pummled of kebab eating townies just because the townie was harder inside.
I think street fighting is from within and training can only help you with this.

Also it is worth noting a few things.

1 - Most street fights are over in a max of 1 min.  (may seem like the but it isnt)
2 - Multiple opponents dont stand round in a ring and attack one after the other whilst Bruce Lee takes on one after the other. No they rush you and if your in my job you'd do well to shut yourself in behind the door because there is no way I can fight and win 10 people.
3 - Train in UFC as much as you like but any round driven with rules sport will fail on the Street.  I have seen BJJ lads do great against one opponent but then get a bottle across the back of his head of one of the crowd. Not fair but life isnt fair and neither is fighting.

I HATE this forum software!! The old one was miles better!!  Even my spell checker wont work on this!!

As a punishment, you will all have to put up with my pants spelling as I refuse to keep cutting and pasting to MS word and back.

RE: thai boxing may be ok but things like roundhouses, etc are not recommended in a street fight, nothing above the hip is as far as i know (in terms of kicks)

unless uv not any choice high kicks are last choice i work my way up lol
better to block and lock than get into legal issues (even if ur defending its up to courts to deside and if hes got a black eye etc it will look worse for you  )

Unconscious competance of a skill you want to develop.  Conditioning and reflexes.

Also, don't get involved - I know a guy who knew a guy that got punched in the head once on a night out in town while he was waiting for a taxi, he stood up too quickly to go for a pee 3 days later and dropped dead from a blood clot on his brain. It made the news I think.

If you have to get out of somewhere fast and exits are blocked, don't go breaking your knuckles on someones skull with your bare fist, it hurts and if you're untrained you probably won't knock the guy out.

Instead use an open palm, hit up from the bottom of the jaw and push them over with it at the same time or to the side of the head, you don't want the head to turn, you want their ear to kiss their shoulder.

But again, just avoid avoid avoid.  It's better not to go to prison or have someone's death on your conscience.

Just read a book called 'Animal Day' by Geoff Thompson, which gives an interesting insight into the ugly reality of a real life street fight, plus the skills and mindset that are essential to walking out alive.

Worth a read....
