When to take Protein shakes? - 02 November 2009 12:32 ( #1 )
Hello all...

Just signed up to this forum.

I have two questions that i've combined into one thread. Hopefully im posting in the right forum! Apologies if not.

I am trying to lose fat around my chest and waist area. What should I be doing? More Cardio or weight training?

And how should I combine this with taking protein shakes without putting on weight? i.e taking protein shakes before/after training? etc.

Hope this makes sense?

Many thanks for your help.

Up the cardio if you want to loose weight, as for the shakes I have one when I get up, one after training and one in the evening.

Hi James. thanks alot for the advice.

But what if your not training everyday? Do I still take them? And how soon after training should you take a protein drink?

You want the one after training as soon as possible, I have 50g of whey and 50g of maltodextrin usually a couple of minutes after I've finished.

The others are just 25g of whey and I always have 3 shakes every day.

if you are dieting and restricting calorie/carb intake then you are likely to be catabolic at some stages throughout the day. if left in this state you will start to lose muscle mass. you therefore need to eat small meals regularly (mainy high protein, low carb meals or protein shakes). try to intake food every 3 hours to stay anabolic. protein is a vital nutrient and when in a calorie defecit (ie when dieting) is even more vital as you are at risk of losing muscle. if i were you i would plan my day to eat every 3 hours, alternating between solid meals and shakes. on training days make sure you have a shake immediately after trianing as that is very important.

a sample day would be:

8:00AM - breakfast (scrambled egg whites, 50g porridge)

11:00AM - low carb protein shake

2:00PM - chicken salad, tuna salad etc

5:00PM protein shake (or post workout shake)

8:00PM - meat and steamed veg

this integration of supplements into a proper diet is how they should be used. not as meal replacements but additions to a strong diet. shakes are useful for curbing your hunger and stopping you snacking on unhealthy treats.

hope this helps.

Personally the only time a protein shake is actually necessary is after an intense weights workout.

(caveat for very muscular guys indeed, competitors etc)

Apart from that a good solid healthy diet, with quality protein, starchy carbohydrates and low fat - emphasising the healthy fats within that - and away you go!

Les, how do you know when you are in need of a shake. What physical signs do you get or it it  just the knowledge that you have had a good workout and therefore your muscles will need re-building?

Johhny - there are no  physical signs.
Having a protein shake after an intense workout is based on knowledge - we know it is the best way to promote recovery and muscle growth.

I add the proviso "intense" because having been around gyms long enough I have seen way to many people knocking back big old protein shakes who have the workout intensity of a wet lettuce and the work ethic of a dead sloth!

Hi all,

Many thanks for the useful replies. Taking notes!

Les - So taking a protein shake immediately after a workout is highly recommended. Does it help to turn the loose fatty type muscle into something more "leaner"? Or is that false info?

Thanks once again.

a post workout protein shake simply aids recovery = it doest help turn anything into anything.
for it to be worthwhile you need to have done something to recover from - a workout,
a protein shake is calories so you need to have a diet that accounts for that, if you are looking to be leaner then the age old rule still applies - you need to use more calories than you eat - Simples :)
