Absolutely not, mate, esp if you're not intending to compete. A friend of mine started vale tudo training when he was 36 -11 years ago- and decided to compete with less than a years training under his belt. (Though he was already a 16-stone bouncer.) In his first fight he beat a well-respected American grappler and in his second fight (the same night) he beat one of Fedor's training partners. Pretty much went down hill after that TBH in terms of competing, but he still trains now and is in amazing shape, esp considering he's now close to 50. Go for it!

Not at all mate. I started at 30 and it was the best thing I ever did. My mate who trains with me is 48 and he started the same time as me. He loves it and has lost 2 stone!! Be careful though. MMA is hard on the body, especially the first few months where you are getting used to moving, falling and using your bodyweight, so take it easy. It may be worth separating up the BJJ and Muay thai elements for the first few month just to get some fundamentals and learn how to move. Either way, take it slow, warm up well and you will love it! tbip2001

IMO seriously consider training BJJ first ( with the gi )...you find this has a slightly slower and more technical pace as opposed to no gi which is alot quicker and explosive potentially resulting in more injuries.....training with the gi in BJJ will then give you a great foundation for training no gi and I believe you will learn better all round movement for bjj starting with the gi. No reason why you can`t compete in BJJ aswell, the comp scene is huge now. Best of luck mate

Best of luck mate I tried Bjj but the guys there were all monsters, I was the smallest with the least proficiency, its a different kind of fitness imo, 5 minutes and you will be fooked

BJJ takes time mate, thats why most people quit within the first 6 months..its tough but it gets easier once you learn how to move correctly... Regarding the cardio...yes it is a different type of fitness in some ways, the key is to relax when your rolling, most new guys will use every bit of cardio and strength they have and not really focus much on techniques which is why they gas after 5 mins !!...but it does all come together, in time !! :-)

I have just been offered the chance to do a fight next year to raise a lot of money for charity. i have never fought (well not in a ring) before and have no real experience. I am 35. Wouldnt say I am fit, but I train a lot in the gym and am strong. I weigh about 17 stone and compete in strongman. Doesnt matter if I win or lose, the charity will still get the money, but is it possible to get in shape in a year (well 15 months) to do a first amateur fight? I feel like its do-able? Need loads of cardio and stamina work, but will join a fighting gym to work on everything. Would at least like to put in a performance....! Too old??
