truGym - £9.99/mth, 24 hour opening - anyone a member?

truGym is planned to open in Peterborough in February.
The blurb says £9.99/month, no contract, 100 stations, 24 hour opening, city centre location.

I think there are a few of these around the country.

Anyone got any experiences of them, before I join up?

Thanks.

It is £9.99 if you join up for a pre paid membership but is 14.99 if you want a rolling contract.

Visited the one in maidstone and it's your typical commercial type gym. A lot of cardio and weights machines

Tempted by the pre-paid.
Very tempted by the 24 hours bit as ideally I'd hit the gym around 5:30am.

sounds great the 24 hr thing would be ideal for me, i hope the modern world get to where i live sometime soon....

If the gyms good and 24hrs id be happy at £30 odd a month.
Also seem to be going the way of contractuall membership here and i wont entertain a gym contract.

Think the Puregym in Leeds had an odd catch in it, where the lower £9.99 rate was available if you signed up before it opened and actually started paying from then too....people joining after it opened paid a higher (but still relatively cheap) rate.

That's second hand info from a mate though, so may not be 100% accurate, but worth double checking the small print...!

to be honest im sad to see this is the way gyms are going.

might be fine for some people that know their stuff, but for the majority of the general public, these are a really bad idea.

if you think gym staff are bad now, wait untill more of these open.  lots more people being injured or giving up because they dont progress.

fair point daz but from a personal angle it would suit me just fine as im a shift worker, generally 3 rolling shifts days nights and afters.
depending on which of the three im on i take or collect my daughter from school.
Shifts quite often change to 12hr days / 12hr nights.
A gym that opens 9am - 9pm mon - fri is next to useless for me prob 50% of my life.

I will have been working 5 nightshifts out of the past 6 weeks with time off inbetween over the christmas break and quite frankly my body doesnt know if its coming or going, been awake till 4am most day while ive been off and a 24hr gym would of been getting some hammer.

I think that 24hr life as crappy as it may be is quite the norm now, super markets etc.

People will always do stupid and dangerous things in gyms whether they are open 24 hrs or not and ive seen some bloody awful instruction that people are paying good money for so no change id think.

I think all gyms should be this way - you can always argue that people will get hurt, however I think a fair few 'experienced' trainers also get hurt, maybe more so from over exuberant lifting.  With shift work and many other ideals a 24 hour gym is an essential thing IMO.

I also think that many gyms could offer the service as an optional extra, my gym is key entry only and to me it seems to be rarely manned as they are off chatting with the other staff throughout the building, so what difference does it make?

there is so much that good exercise professionals 'could' offer gym goers though.  we should be moving towards better staff and improving things, not less staff and no help for people.

things arent great as they are, but IMO these places are going in the wrong direction.

^^^ I agree Daz but most gyms I have been in (and there have been a lot) the staff don't help anyone - they give the obligatory induction and then the average gym goer is just left to their own devices.  Most staff are not pro active at all with advice and helping those who need it.

Those who do offer the services are there as PTs and get money from the client for the extra work involved - I think the gyms should be employing this expertise as a priority and offering it as part of the service but they don't.  So what's the point, you may as well pay the minimum with little or no contact and go when you want too 24/7.

Totally agree with Dazc

Gyms are now simply a large room full of equipment ,  with the majority of staff simply being a human "quick set up guide" for said equipment .

Of course there is the good side , that guys that know their stuff can train cheaply and conveniently.

The old ideal of a spit and sawdust "underground" haven , run by Bodybuilders, for bodybuilders (and anyone else wants results)  are a dying breed

Would be great in some ways if these new places were to somehow absorb the "mainstream" customers , and let the Hardcore gyms revert to their former hardcore glory .... but I know that really this would turn our gym from a profit making business , into something that simply ticked over / labour of love  -  can't have our cake and eat it I suppose !
I cannot bring myself to completely denounce these places !  I'd be more than happy to use one , and appreciate the value for money ,  BUT ,  if 20 years ago I had walked into one of these places , I'd probably have given up training after a few months.  I simply can't envisage newbs going into one of these places for the first time ,and forging a "training career" , in the same way that they would if they walked into a hardcore gym , ran by a bodybuilder , surrounded by similar bodybuilders , with pictures of the owner and other members in stage condition all over the walls.

good points Dr Z and all too true about the spit n saw dust type gym.
they are far superior to the fitness first type gym (a few months at F/F was a soul destroying experience for me )
Just basing my opinion purely based around my own time constraints and im sure the same goes for many others.

Not all gyms have Cheery rays of sunshine like you behind the counter who offer a wealth of knowledge and are happy to pass on their knowledge and experience to any who might ask for it...

oh errr hang on...lol
