weight loss and muscle gain?? help! - 05 November 2009 10:40 ( #1 )
Hi,

I am a bit of a newbie to this stuff and i am looking to just clear a couple of things up.

I have recently joined the gym (after doing no exercise whatsoever for like 2 years) and i am doing about 30 mins of cardio 3 days a week. 1st of all is this enough to lose weight?

Also, whilst at the gym i am doing some weights, nothing intense at all.
I have read that it is near on impossiple to lose weight and bulk up at the same time.

Will i have a problem losing weight if i am doing weights aswell?

I am 5'9" and just under 224lbs @ 21 years old.

Thanks very much,

Ry

While im certainly not an expert, the logic behind weightloss is as so:

Burn more fat than you consume.

On the basis that you are not consuming more kcal a day than you burn (forget about the gym) you will maintain your weight/fluctuate. Now that your going to the gym this should shift the ballence.

I am not sure how weight training will effect you, i am also very interested in knowing this.

Again im no expert, im still trying to learn all this myself. I look forward to seeing other replys.

Weight training will increase muscle mass.

muscle mass burns considerably more calories per day than fat mass.

So yes, keep the weights up, nothing major yet, just basic compound (multi joinr) movements.

When you first start training - it is super easy to gain muscle and lose fat.
In fact I would be surprised if it didnt happen this way.

however, in a year, or more - things change: thats why people say you cant do both.
However, enjoy the first flushes of training - work hard to have good form, and have a lot of fun training and gaining.

When it all slows down - then and only then start thinking any more about this question :)

And as above - basic movements are best!

Yes things change, but it is still perfectly possible and not too difficult, to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time.
