what are bb judged on? 28 April 2011 18:04 (permalink)
first of i hope this is in the right section, i have only been really into the bodybuilding side of training for just over a year or so, and trying to work out what exactly the judges would look for..

i got the basic.. size ..condition..  proportion but when i look at guys up on stage in pics etc and people say oh number 3 by far, i dont get it lol.

anyone care to maybee post some pics up of  good parts .. bad parts etc. to maybe explain the difference hah

only really got thinking of it as a while back on a diff site some one who has judged in tihe past said i have good calfs.. long muscle bellies, after a while though wtf does that mean my calfs look like calfs lol

Bodybuilding is very subjective indeed, and the first thing to bear in mind is that whatever decision is made is based on a panel of judges' opinion.  There is not necessarily any right or wrong in bodybuilding; although there are certainly sought after ideals.  I have been surpised a few times at shows when somebody has won over somebody I personally thought was far more dialed in....

Secondly, it depends on the organisation you compete with (this actually applies more to ladies categories but still is significant as a male competitor.  Sometimes judges are searchng for a certain "look").

Judges mark competitors on muscularity, proportion, symmetry, size and condition (leaness and visibility of muscles and separation).
Generally, the most important factor is the "full package".  A competitor should have a good combination of the above, and although it is great to have a certain showcase or outstanding bodypart (think dorian yates' back), this should not detract from the rest of the physique as a package, but compliment it.

Colour is also a factor.  It should be consistent and dark enough to absorb the stage lighting.  Poor colour or too much oil can destroy how your physique appears on stage.

Presentation is also an overlooked factor.  It's all well and good to have a fantastic physique, but if your posing and the way you carry yourself on stage sucks, then this can seriously detract from the beauty of a great body.  If two twins with indentical bodies come on stage and one can pose and display his physique well but the other looks uncomfortable or unable to properly co-ordinate the poses, the former will win.
From what I have seen as well, visible confidence (not arrogance) can also have a positive effect on one's placing.

    Hope this helps.
