what size foam roller?

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere - i couldn't find anything by searching - i was wondering what size of foam roller i should buy?

I've a foam roll virgin - does the thickness/length make any difference? is one better or worse for different things?

Thanks

    This is the one I went for :http://physiosupplies.c.../Round_Foam_Rollers.html it's 15cm x 90 cm

You can also get white ones which I think are a bit cheaper. Both will do the job and are good for a variety of different movements.

I used one similar to Jules to start with but found they lose their hardness quite quickly if you're using it regularly.

    Went for this one which is a bit narrower but is much much tougher;

    http://www.escapefitnes...store/shopexd.asp?id=477

Just means that you have to roll one leg at a time if you're doing hams or quads (although you can get more pressure on it by putting the other leg on top!). Would go for the escapefitness one ahead of a traditional foam one personally.

They are used to work the muscles and fascia, in a similar way to a sports massage and myofascial release.

The one you have will be a fine starting point for you, the one AK has linked will certainly be better in the long run tho.

I've ordered loads of the other ones, they are perfectly decent and will last you a few months I shoudl think (depending how heavy you are and how often you use it)

how often should i use it? i was probably going to do the areas that seem to be causing me some trouble everyday and maybe a more comprehensive or full body roll 2 or 3 times a week if i can

I'll do static stretching and foam rolling stuff twice a day on my non-gym days normally just to keep things supple - on gym days ill have a roll before and after weights.

Can't really overtrain it as such.

I wish I was that disciplined AK, I need to be but with my boy causing havoc I never get round to it. But post training I spend a good 20-30mins stretching and rolling.

TBH its only a 5 minute one in the morning and 10 in the evening - i just find if i go 2 days without any training or mobility stuff i end up horrendously tight!

I use mine as a warm up for a morning run....mainly my legs.

Any techniques for upper body usage?

okay, so i got my foam roller yesterday and i'm fairly pleased. Lets just see how it holds up!

Just done my first session on my lower body and back....its pretty painful!!! not in a bad/worrying way but not particularly fun either! The first time i'v done anything like this so i guess its to be expected

my calves and...er...side of leg?! lol had some serious pressure points

LOL yeah, calves will always hurt IME, but the ITB/TFL does get better - and then you get the firmer roller and it feels like you are back to square one

haha i bet that feels really good, you've just spent a couple of months working out all the knots with your regular roller...then BAM! the firm one brings a load more pain. Great!

I found it pretty hard to roll my piriformis area, not sure i've got that down just yet. I've been using a tnation article called 'feel better for 10 bucks' by Eric Cressy as a guide.

One thing - is it good to stretch after foam rolling?
