£500 for a bag of supplements & a diet sheet!!!

A woman came to me asking me to help her to get ready for a show next year(sept)...

She has competed once already, last year in the same show.

4 weeks out, she needed help & asked this guy(owns his own business, offering nutrition/training courses, pre-contest preparation: I'm sure James & TT know who I'm talking about).
She flew to Birmingham to see him, he sold her a bag of supplements(whey, glutamine, fat-burners, Vit B), gave her a diet sheet. she spent 2 hrs with him...

He charged her £500!!!

Am I wrong when I think he took advantage of her, taking too much money from her? Or is it the normal fees, for a 2hrs consultation?!

She should have done her research IMO. If she agreed to pay that rate then she has only herself to blame.

Have a bit of sympathy for her, but as said above she should have shopped around beforehand.

mind you if he has a very good reputation then he might feel these costs are justifiable

I dont think i'd have paid that much, but ultimately it was her money, and her decision to pay.

    To James...

    Would you charge the same?

Have to say, she's an "easy target", but still, I won't take advantage of her & take her money...

Unfortunately its a simple case of supply and demand , all the while some people are prepared to pay through the nose, people like the guy you mention will continue operating in such a manner

A shame , but you see it in all walks of life , not just bodybuilding

What did she expect to get for her 500quid?

    More time?
    More supps?
    Better advice?

Is there an element of on-going support by email/phone included in the price?

Have to say, she's an "easy target", but still, I won't take advantage of her & take her money...

My fee for full nutritional advice pre-comp is £175 but that's for the 20 weeks. If she presented to me 4 weeks out (and that was sufficient time) I would probably charge around £75. Or if she just wanted to see me as a client face-to-face then she'd simply follow my standard rate (in office) £50 initial appointment (50-60mins), £30 follow up (30mins) or £95 for 1 initial and 2 follow ups (which would probably be ideal for her 4 weeks out). Whichever she chose this would also ahve email/phone back up advice as needed (though I do stipulate barriers but this is purely to prevent people taking the you-know-what and I have only once had to use these barriers!)

If the person wants training, posing and general pre-comp advice aswell, the Mark Barber (MT member BodyShaper) will also help and his gym is 50 yards from my consulting rooms, and the client would be charge appropriately and fairly though Healthy Action.

Supplements: we do stock a few tubs of protien and such like, but this is purely for the odd client who can't be bothered to shop for it. Our price is 20% below RRP and more often than not I simply advise the client what product types to get and tell them to use the MT sponsors

My prices above may still seem alot, but that's the fee for a formally qualified person like myself and has to account for secretarial support, office rent, bills and admin too. Plus it's the same fee for an overweight person, a food intolerance sufferer or any sports.

That £500 does seem steep but it does depend on what supplements she got and what they were priced at.

That’s a disgrace Malika Its on a similar level to major supplement companies using smart marketing tactics aimed at the novice trainer who knows no better in order to make colossal amounts of money.
I will admit that I was one of those people when I started training and I imagine there is a lot of others on here like that also unless you were lucky enough to get proper advice from the start of your weight training. I remember flicking through the pages of Flex and other b.building mags and after seeing the flashy adverts for Muscle Tech etc. I would rush out and buy it.
Unfortunately it’s the same in any business and unless you know exactly what you want and need etc. there will always be people to take advantage of your situation.
