12 years since last comp (Am I daft?)

Hi,

Thanks Jason for sorting out my registration!! Great website!!

I am seriously thinking about competing again after a lapse of approx 12 years!! I think it is the thought that I am approaching 40 (still only 37 at the mo!!) and I want to prove to myself that I can do it for at least one more time. Am I being a little ambitious I wonder to myself?

I used to compete in Nabba Figure. My last comp was the Britain finals in Blackpool having qualified in the North West at Southport. I have not been to a comp in all this time so I wil be going along to Bradford next month to see what the standard is like today. If anyone can throw a little more light on any differences between then and now then I would appreciate any comments.

I am now a qualified Nutritionist so I hope to use my new found knowledge to my advantage. I will also be studying a personal training course soon and hope to find a good training buddy and become their 'project' for the year!!

HI! Great to have someone around with contest experience...I can't help with your question really but I don't see why you can't do it all over again - best of luck!

    Thanks for the encouragement guys!!

I have given myself a headache at the mo as I have spent all day so far going through various sites looking at piccies and reading about all the latest products. I must say it has all changed on that front!! You used to be quite unique if you took lipotropics when I first competed!! Never mind creatine, glutamine and whey powder!! [:0]

I went to the gym after sending my post this morning and it is amazing how stronger I felt having decided to compete again!! I know I have a hell of a way to go yet but I hope I hvae got a good foundation to start from. I currently have a sore elbow and a twisted ankle!! So training is a little rough to say the least but I was chuffed to be able to pick up the 14kg dumbells and go for a straight 3 x12 bench presses with no help and my sore elbow. I used to use 18kg or 20kg when I trained with my dad!! (I had confidence in him to make sure I didn't drop them on my face LOL) so I do not think I am doing too bad. (I may seem a wimp to any of you who have been training for a long time)

Your comments about someone with comp experience, has no one competed here (females that is)? If there are, how well have you all done and in what comps and categories?

Hi Kitty and a big welcome to you!!

Now why did you stop after having been qualified to do another and bigger contest?

I know competing is difficult and it takes a lot of your time but don't we all have the urge to try to get further?

I'm a competitor and I must admit I don't like the NABBA too much. The girls are way too cut in my opinion. You got many other federations out there, do a search and fix yourself a date.
(We'll be in here to help you all we can!)
    Good luck!

I stopped competing simply because I became lazy!! From going to the gym 6 days per week to nothing does seem totally ridiculous when I think about it but that's what I did. I used to work one mile away from home which meant I was home early every night, my mum would have a health meal ready for me and then I used to go straight to the gym, get home a few hours later (we used to socialise there after training) and go right to bed!! What a life!

I then changed jobs and had to drive 20 miles each way. This meant I was getting home later, my mum never had a meal ready as she did not know what time I was getting home due to traffic etc(mobile phones were not the in thing then!!). This all meant that I was at the gym too late for my training partner. I started missing the odd session and then before I knew it I stopped altogether. My partner (now hubby) and I bought a house close to where I worked but I never found a new gym. I then got very comfy having my own place and we got into having a few glasses of wine a night and hey presto guess what???....I ballooned up to 158lbs!! (I am only 4'10.5")[V]. I became too ashamed to go to a gym but 2 years ago I decided I had to do something about it. We have moved again and joined one of these 'large chain' gyms which I love as the equipment range is fabulous. I am also self employed and as I am in the beginning stages I am still very quiet so I can train whenever I want. I start my personal trainer course next month so I hope to find someone there to train me. I am now 126lbs, still a way to go but I feel fitter than I did in my 20's!! (I used to compete at 96lbs). My target is to lose 15lbs before Christmas then I should be able to 'see' how much further I need to go.

Which associations would you recommend then? I thought only Nabba did the figure, I am certainly not big enough and don't want to be, to compete in physique.

Good luck with competing gymbabeliz, have you a comp in mind yet?

    welcome, Kitty!!

if i'm not mistaken its easier for us girls to build quality muscle as we get older because our estrogen levels diminish as we get older....can someone correct me if i'm wrong?

i comptete, but in the bodybuilding level, i'm only 26, and not in the shape i want to be in as i only started last year, but for all the experience its worth i'll keep doing it until my muscles (and my mind too) mature enough for me to bring home a gold. :) i say to you, do it!! all the best of luck to you!

    Thanks DG

Couldn't get in through her site but I have looked at piccies of her elsewhere. Yes she looks good, she's very lean and has not got too much muscle which some Figure girls seem to have these days. Thanks for the inspiration!!

    Hi kitty -
I don't know about female only stuff but my mate won a BBing comp when he was 40.
You can do it if you try.

    Thanks again guys!

I don't recall you being abrupt Pusha!! Regarding supps I can get them at cost price [:p]! I have set myself goals and my first one if for the second week in Nov when I am being filmed for a TV holiday programme!! I know TV makes you look bigger so the diet is pretty strict and I am working hard at the gym to achieve my goal. I have also just met a girl on the personal training course that I am doing who is interested in competing for the first time at 32. She is looking fab and has only trained since May!! I trained with her yesterday and she is bloody strong! Single arm tricep rope pulldowns with 50lbs![xx(] Can't wait to see her in form.

Regarding gaining weight I am finding that I am staying about the same but if the Tanita scales are right then the BF is dropping slowly but surely! I also feel tighter beneath the layers that shouldn't be there!

Thanks John, I was looking at photos of Terri Roberts today (NABBA Fitness champ), she's in her 40's and looks fab. I know I won't look as good as she does but at least it's inspiring to see someone else older than me.

Thanks dg, had a quick look but there are so many photos....some look a bit cheesy but others are nice and artistic. Yes according to my tanitas this morning I am down 2% but I am only showing 2lb weight loss, so I'm please with that. Are you from Lancs by any chance?

Pusha, yes, I intend to buy some calipers. We will be using them on the college course so I'll get proper instructions on how to use them right too!!

I asked if you were Lancs because of saying 'reet'. That's a typical Lancs pronunciation!! Will check out the other photos. And yes, I think I shall have to set up a journal even if it's for my own record! Constructive criticism will also be welcome as it will get me on the right track.
