6k to spend - which car?
New job is in place so I think I deserve a new car! :) My ever reliable Calibras tax runs out in July, so its time to get something a little nicer and more efficient..so what you think? Age 24, 5 years no claims, 6k to spend, no bigger that a 1.6, black or silver, as low mileage as poss. Not into anything too flash like GTI's etc....something thats reliable, fuel efficient. Ideas so far - 55 reg New shape megane - 53 reg BMW 316i Any advice all? Cheers

Could get a decent 54 plate astra with relatively low mileage. Quite a nice car.

Golf & Focus are both well thought of TBH one of the biggest factors on buying a car now IMO is its tax bracket my 2.2L car is gonna cost £300 to tax next year- if you research into the emmisions and future tax brackets this is a major point IMO and will prob have a reasnoble effect on residual values too- you may find a nippy 1.4 is suitable for your needs and cheaper to tax etc etc

I'd go for a Peugeot 207 1.4S on a 2006 plate with maybe 20k on the clock www.pistonheads.com A few on there for £6.5k ish.....worth a look - they have most of the toys and you'll sell it on easily!

well as is customary in car threads i shall ignore your £6k budget and suggest a noble, this will prevent others from doing this, however some may suggest noble beaters i am surprised the highest value of car mentioned so far is only about £20k though for £6k id say a focus, but you say flashy? ive got a 1.6 zetec focus doesnt make you poo your pants but its not too bad

Noble gets my vote tho.

I just bought a 2001 Golf 1.9 TDi at the weekend for £4600. Possibly could have got it down to £4500 though. Low insurance (£318 per year) Tax only £115 per year Great fuel economy. Great performance. Engine will last forever if properly maintained. Ticks all your boxes except the actual engine size but why are you limiting yourself to only 1.6?
