About to change car.

Hi all been i have been looking changing car for sometime now, after changing jobs i now require a diesel.  I was looking at few cars like a mazda6, but they would be push me to breaking point fiancé wise.  So i have changed my plan and going to go for a S40. Been to look at 2 today and thinking about it tonight. Both appear to be good cars, same colour, can’t fault either of them but can’t decide which one to go for.

car 1) Is a 56 plate 2.0D SE Sport with 50k on the clock, with the alloy upgrade and with the 6 speaker cd changer high performance audio system. Full leather, electric seats, auto everything including bending lights. @ £5500 from my local Volvo dealer with 12 month warranty.

car2) is a 58 plate 2.0D SE R-design with 65K on the clock, with all the normal R-design features. But lacks the sound system, electric seats etc. But looks that much more meaner! @ £7000 from a local dealer again offering 12 months warranty.

I know what my head is telling me, but my heart is saying the opposite. Anyway just wanted to get some like minded people opinions? As far as i am aware they both the same car just with a different bodykit and a few other trim bits. Does the R-design really warrant that much value over the sport? As i prefer the looks of the R-design, but my head can’t just justify that each money for the age and mileage?  Plus the final hurdle its a Volvo!

Why not an audi or BMW? The mazda 6 value will drop horrendously and the newer volvos are less desirable.

Audi a4 would be my choice as long is it was 4wd, probably a bad choice with rwd incase we get bad snow one winter you won't be going anywhere.

If creature comforts matter to you then get the higher specced model.

If you're more into looks, get the R design.

Personally i'd get the higher specced model as you can always add nicer alloys or a kit if you really want to.

Currently have a BMW 320i Touring, good car just old, tired and drinking the fuel with my commute now!  Not a fan of Audi’s just seem like a up market VW to me.  Plus people want stupid money for them.  But saying that you can say the same about the S40 as a up market focus as the chassis is the same.

320D m sport, higher mileage 335D - the 335D with a remap is insanely quick.

My last car was an e46 m3, before that was an e46 330ci so I'm slightly biased towards BMW
