Advice needed

The company I work for is owned by my best mate. He is being ....cked over by the people who provide him the credit card facilities. He has not been able to use the credit card terminal for months, despite all his efforts of trying to get it sorted. Then it turns out, that it is the terminal people's fault by not billing him properly. So, the Payment Terminal company now wants to charge my mate a ridiculous amount that is dating back for the period the Payment Term Co has messed up. My mate told them he is not paying, because it is not fair to be charged for a service he did not receive. He needs his terminal to take payment from people wanting to use their cards. He has been loosing business because he couldn't take payment due to terminal not working.
I said to him, that he should tell Terminal People to get their act together and make the bloody thing work, because the more money he is loosing out, the more he should be suing them for, instead of being charged for months of non use, when the bloody thing is not even working!
It is a small company and my mate is the owner. He said, he wants to have a good relationship with the bank and does not want to p1ss people off.
I still find it unfair and would love to be able to help him. Any advice?

Citizens advice can be VERY helpful.
My local one had an amazing lawyer lady volunteering  p/t on her maternity leave, she talked a LOT of sense.
