Alvor, Portugal or Canaries for family hol'

Hey all, I normally go to the Canaries for my hols but there is a big price difference this year so I have had a hunt around and can get a dirt cheap deal to the algarve.

I have never been to the Algarve but have been quite sceptical, is it any good, we are looking at Alvor, apparently quite quaint and quiet which is great for my wife and 2 kids.

How does the Algarve compare price wise to the Canaries? I found the Canaries expensive last November.

Any opinions welcome

I go to Algarve, Portugal fairly regular, much prefer it over the Canaries. I was talking with a girl I go to school with and her family moved to Alvor so she's there a couple times a year, she said it's really nice.

I've always found Portugal to be slightly more expensive than Spain since the introduction of the Euro, not enough for me to complain though.

The sea in the Algarve is quite cold compared to Spain isn't it?
I'm thinking about Malta myself. Lots of historical stuff to see. Never been though.

Yeh but it's warmer than here but colder than Spain, I have no problem with going in the sea here so it doesn't bother me.

I love the cool sea breeze in Portugal aswell.

I wasn't a big fan of the Algarve, I found it a more expensive, more unfriendly and generally not as developed as Spain. I also had to check my change everywhere as I found a lot of the shops and restaurants tried to rip you off. Personally I'd rather go to Cyprus or Greece.

I'm going to Albufeira in Algarve, Portugal this year. My missus goes there every year and loves it. For what we paid, it's a cheap week long getaway. Really looking forward to it. I've also booked us some Quad bikes for a tour round Albufeira =D Exciting times!

just booked a 'cheap' week to Lanzarote Puerto Del Carmen old town, total cost ~£300 for 2 including flights. Apt isnt the Ritz but we know it to be nice enough and in a cracking area.

Love PDC old town, no hassle, no looky lookys, no PR diddies trying to get you into their bars! Its fairly Spanish still and has a wealth of great restaurants and loads of bars with live bands and a brilliant bay for snorkelling in. I am going twice in the next 8 weeks

My family has had a t****are in Albufuiera for more than a decade, none of us have ever been ripped off, never found it unfriendly ever. If we did we wouldn't go back. Perhaps they didn't like you for whatever reason?

I also went with the boys in 2008 on a lads holiday, best one of my life.

Thankyou for your advice, but.....I found a great deal in June to Calpe, £400 for the family in a two bed villa in the hills, Maryville I think it's called, great reviews just abit out of the way but shouldn't be an issue with a hire car.

I wanted to avoid the Brits on holiday bit so obviously Benidorm is a no-no but as Calpe is along the cost it should be okay, or so I'm told.

Has anyone been? what's it like in June? food, beaches etc...? any tips on where to visit?

Yes maybe the people knew I was coming and decided to rip us off, it wasn't just me plenty of others in the hotel were saying the same. I found the food/drink expensive and a pretty poor standard. When I say not as developed I am taking about the general infrastructure and lack of aircon everywhere, never had any probs like that round alicante. Maybe I was just unlucky.

LMAO, dunno where you were but we had no problem with aircon anywhere, and if you search my old posts I've mentioned how good the food is there before.

In saying that, they do hate the English so it's maybe that.

I don't look English though! I was staying around praia da rocha, I was expecting fresh exquisite seafood, but very let down.
