Am i totally wrong here or what?

So im talking to my friend on MSN. Hes a bit chub and wants to lose weight. I used to be 14 and a half stone when i was about 5ft 9 and 14/15 years old with no muscle. I lost a load of that and now im bulking so i like to think i know a little bit about the whole game.
Basically he thinks he will get huge arms and lose a load of weight from playing tennis alone.
He said to read up on Rafael Nadal and he thinks his arms look like that from tennis. I try to explain that to build muscle you need a surplus of calories and need to lift weights. He wont have any of it though, he says his chest and back and arms will all get toned from leaning in and swinging for the ball playing tennis all summer.

Im far from an expert but i like to give the most basic advice to people who want to lose weight or tone up or whatever.
But oh well. I guess he will be laughing at me when he looks like Arnie at the end of the summer.

It depends on his goals, hes gonna look better of ANY type of activity after awhile, givin a long enough time playing tennis he will deffo eventually lose weight and tone up any muscle that developed and he already had.

What he wont do by the sounds of it if all the background training and dieting, but he WILL get better looking if he sticks at tennis.

If he is your friend, tell him it a god idea to get into the tennis, then invite him to go to the gym with you and explain that it would help his game to train alittle there too, alot of people dont like gyms, but id never belittle one of my mates trying to make any kind of lifestyle change.

nedal will have a very, very hard training regieme and his 'muscles' are a bi-product of his sport specifc training.  he doesnt train for muscle, he trains for performance.  to achieve that look it wdnt be hard but to get like that from tennis he wd have to follow an extreme training shedule.

so basically tell him to get down the gym and stop chattin sh1t!!

    Good Post by Curvbe3ebbed

Tell him Raefael Nadal is a semi-pro BB.

Alternatively, save yourself the hassle and leave him to it.

encourage him to play tennis, as from what youve said anything will be benificial to him. After x amount of time playing tennis he will see hopefully that other stimulous is required for growth.

    Thankyouplease

Agree with cu3ed. Don't discourage him at all, at least he's prepared to do something and as a friend you should be happy for him. Just because you like to do one thing doesn't mean everyone else should whether we feel it's the right or wrong thing to do. Exercise has to be enjoyable otherwise we'd pack it in. What your friend may find however is that he wants to improve for his game and that's where you come in. Have a look at sports specific routines for him and maybe print them off for him to read. Plant the seed and when it develops he'll ask for your help. You could also look into Rafael Nadal and research his training methods, if you spot any good information then again, pass it on!

Leave it up to him. You will get bigger and he will stay the same and then he will see who is right.

Sounds to me like he's already decided that's his route.  There is no talking to people like this, they will do it their way regardless.  I have many mates like this, I used to spend ages talking to them online or whatever giving them links and advice, and they just aren't interested.

Now, if i ever get asked anything, I give them 1 article and let them please themselves.  I never talk about supplements, diet, training, steroids to anybody anymore, ever.  Hate it!

    Unaffiliated.
