Nobody knows enough about the circumstances yet to have a view IMO.

My guess is: Planes go missing all the time, and we don't normally hear about it unless it's near to home and/or got a lot of white folks on it. The meeja has decided we now need to know about all plane mishaps for some reason.
    It's trendy.
Like dangerous dogs, or constant earthquakes (remember that? not surprised if you don't), bird flu, ebola, whatever.

Stop watching the "news", and all those plane accidents that keep happening all the time will stop.
If an accident that actually has any relevance to you happens, you'll hear about it.

Ferry fire and a plane disappearance on the same day, maybe someone set the plane on fire and it went down

A few thoughts on the matter.

Yes the world is getting smaller and thus we hear about things going on in further afield more, however some of the airlines that have lost planes are not exactly minor players in the game.
I feel for the families as they will most likely be tortured for weeks waiting to hear what has happened and then will be subject to the bad news that will tear them apart.
