Anyone Just Watched Panorama ?

It was about Corus , the steelworking company which used to be British Steel and is now owned by Tata a massive Indian company. The program was about the job cuts in Britain ,Tata's agenda and potential goverment funding etc. Anyone see it ? any thought's ? or does any one have any thought's or opinions on this issue anyway ?

I work for Corus but please dont hold back if you have some potentially controversial views. I 'll give my own thoughts tomorrow but I bet there not in line with the majority of my workmates !  saying that I expect my post to be #2 in this thread anyway

Didn't see the programme but have read stuff about a consortium of customers wanting to back out of a deal to buy steel off Corus????????????

I'd like to see the Gov do everything in it's power to push the company forward and save jobs. This country needs all the manufacturing output it can produce.

Steelmaking is being taxed out of existance in the west.  Carbon credits will force the whole industry out.

Mate I didn't watch the Panorama, but I think Tata aren't doing as much as they could do. Its weird because (I think) they bought Corus near the height of steel prices, and it seemed that it was more so they could have the biggest steel company in the world rather than because it was good value.

There is a similar situation with Jaguar. Tata bought them, and then when they struggled they wanted the government to intervene.
Its a very uncertain situation at the moment.

The welder (who lost his job) with 20 years or so experience (most at British Steel/Corus) discovering that the market elsewhere would only pay him less than £7 per hour was particularly poignant.

Welcome to the country that don't make **** any more.

Still Avon are hiring graduates to sell their make-up door to door......  so every cloud has a **** stained lining.

I'm not very good at composing long posts so I'll just try and put a few of my views in a bullet point style.

Corus / British Steel is a big fat bloated company which has served as a gravy train for thousands of workers who have been overpaid and underworked for generations. *

The average Corus worker is an unskilled laborer who earns 25-30K before overtime and bonuses. It is not unusual for a worker to pick up 35- 40K in a good year.  This is way above the national average but oddly enough the wage bill is not a significant factor in the downfall of the company.

I've never had a job before where it is not frowned upon by your immediate supervisors to sleep for several hours in the event of a breakdown. I work with blokes who moan if they didn't get three hours sleep on a nightshift.

Why should Tata an Indian company bend over backwards to keep jobs in Britain where we are relatively rich when they could move those jobs to India where millions live in abject poverty ?

Would people feel so sorry for a lot of Corus workers if they new how much they are getting in redundancy and pension payouts. At my site 63 men have taken voluntary redundancy with payments ranging from 60-130k and £250-£350 pounds a week pension. Yes they paid into that pension but so did British Steel / Corus.

Thats my negative view of Corus and some of it's employee's . But I realize there are many many people who are going to be out of work who have worked hard , not directly been employed by Corus and wont have fat payouts coming to them

I will get about £700 in redundancy and I'm cashing my pension in which should give me another couple of grand. That will not last long. God only knows what I'll do now. I have no real skills to offer and hardworking 30 somethings are not in short supply.

Forgetting about me, what are all these other unskilled workers going to do  ? they cant all train to be plumbers or plasterers. They wouldn't be able to cope with an office environment. There are no other manufacturing jobs available, or not nearly enough anyway.

Gone are the days when you could f*ck about at school, leave at sixteen and walk into a well paid job with your dad down at the steelmill , mine or factory. But is this anyone's fault ? should you be able to get a well paid job with no real skills ? I really dont know how I feel about it all.

I have no officially lost my job yet but I'm 99% certain I'm going to at the end of the 90 day consultation period.

Thank you to those who have expressed concern.

    * my views are based on my experience at the Corus site where I work and from speaking to friends who work at other local Corus sites. Other sites may be run differently.

Thats a good post, very well put. I tend to agree with you with what you say about Tata, but for every bloated overpaid worker, there are also people who will be in big trouble when they lose their job.

Fingers crossed for you though, have you got any ideas of what you could do if you did get redundancy? Professional strongman?

I'm in a similar situation, I work in a different industry (IT), but my existing job is going, and I'm moving back to shift work (7-7 days and nights). I don't know how long that will last for, I reckon I have about a year before I'm gone.

im a steel buyer for a company, and i deal with corus alot, the things they have done for me are crazy, and i really can understand why they are in so much trouble.. they are selling steel at a massive loss and have been for months now, just to turn old stock into cash ASAP.. it doesnt matter what price i get on 20 tonne of steel from joe bloggs steel, as i know corus will do it cheaper everytime when i go to them.. basically if a supplier told me 300 quid per tonne and i went to corus and said ive got that price they would undercut straight off, regardless of there cost price.. very strange as they are making big losses..

however they are starting to take hold of the market again by slowing and stopping alot of production at the mills, which is making it hard for other small steel holders to get stock, thus pushing prices up, clever, but bad for me in the long run, but yeah the word is corus are in the ****..
