Anyone else get a clunking noise when they do situps?

I get like a *clunkclunk* from my hips/lower back on each rep.  It doesn't hurt, but basically something must be grinding down there.  I can do a crunch with no problems, it's just the full sit up that is a problem.  I also get it if I bring in my legs and do the bicycle thing on my back.

I do have some lower back problems.  I'm pretty stiff all round, but my lower back has been bad for years, the physio I went to for months said it was too stiff in the lower back and wasn't moving enough, i've been doing stretches to loosen it up.  And it's somewhat better.  I've also been told to do more core work to support the back, which is there the situps come in.

One of my hip flexors does something similair, I think its caused because it is tight and pops in and out of the groove it sits in.......sorry thats not very technical and someone with a better knowledge of anatomy may have a clearer expination.

Do you do anything about it, ignore it, or just avoid exercises where it happens?

I should do a stretch for the hip flexors but I dont do any moves that cause it to pop at the moment so havn't bothered, I should still do them though.

And obviously it is impossible for anyone to diagnose what is causing your problem, didn't the physio say exactly what was making the noise?

Well TBH i was seeing the physio for a different problem so it seemed pretty minor at the time and I never asked.  I don't expect a diagnosis, but if it's a common thing that someone knows about then I'm all ears.

I have this same problem. I've been trying to work out why it does click for ages. The thing is i get slight lower back pain when i heavy squat. I also get it slightly when i deadlift, but since i've improved my form it hasn't been that bad. If you get any pain is it like the lower part of your back i.e, just above you glutes? I'm not sure how to fix this, but it has improved and hasn't got worse. I've been looking at whether it's some muscle like gluteus minimus and doing some stretches seems to help. I hear the crunches also when i do situps and wondered if this is the reason for why my back pain got worse and certain stages of training.
