Article on Body Fat Monitors

In todays Daily Mail, page 44.

The test subject was a female 5ft 5 and weighing 10st 12lb, they measured her bodyfat using a BodPod, which is supposed to be highly accurate as measures the volume of air you displace while sitting in the pod. Her bodyfat came out as 27.8%

They then took 8 sets of scales and tested her body fat on those. The results vary a lot!

Omron BF500 £99.95 = 31.4%
Salter F1tness Plus £50 = 30.8%
Tanita BC570 £59.99 = 27.2%
Terraillon £74.99 = 27.5%
WeightWatchers £50 = 29.9%
Lloyds Pharmacy handheld £4.99 = 32.8%
Tanita BC545 £199.99 = 26.8%
Accufitness (callipers) £42.95 = 30%

    Makes you wonder really.

The two most expensive (and you would have thought most reliable) at £199 and £99 vary by nearly 5%

Never really trusted them anyway, not since I used one back when I was quite skinny and was told I was at 40% odd

will link this to start with

    ok

    my 2p?

too many people love numbers in the recreational fitness world

    my bottom line?

    if you are fat, cut
if you are happy with BF and the way you look, focus on adding lean tissue

those numbers not only fluctuate from monitor to monitor but from day to day, hour to hour and postpranidal become even more of a lottery

i personally think people are getting caught up in numbers which in turn can, and i state can, turn into a fixation with the numbers and not body composition

i have seen a fair few walk away from training becuiase of these machines yet they are still pushed to the public as "healthy tools"

IMO they are far from it

    get a tape measure
    get a mirror
look at how your clothes fit
    eat clean
    lift weights
    do X amount of cardio

if you still look crap in your book, ask for help

Interesting. What it's basically saying is you are very lucky to get an accurate bodyfat reading. I'll just stick to the mirror for now :)

I never have bothered with them myself. I have a 'benchmark' pair of trousers and when they start to feel a bit tight .... I know it's time to pull the reins in.

Also as TT says the mirror is a valuable tool ... I always see weight gain on my face straightaway. More chins than a Chinese directory boohoo

I get that as well , weight goes straight onto my face. Look like Mr Stay Puft on Deca. I had my bf taken last week using biometrical impedence and it came out as 20 %. Now I KNOW I ain't 20 % but the guy was Saying 'ooh you're 20%, you got quite a bit to lose etc. I was like hang on mate, do you actually want to take 20 secs to look at me to realise how much boll0cks that is

For it to be assessed properly it needs to be carried out on more than one person

I think you are right on that but as i think has been said before there is no way other than an autopsy to get a truly accurate measure of bodyfat percentage.

    Oh and nice BUMP

I am 8-11% with calipers. 4-7% with the machine at work. So with that in mind I must have very lean organs.

    Body Weight - 83kg
    Bench - 145kg
    Squat - 190kg
    Clean & Jerk - 129kg
    Snatch - 98kg
