Back problem during ab exercises

I hurt my lower back last fall while playing keeper in a highschool soccer game. It didn't seem to get better until track season in the spring (basketball season inbetween didn't help at all). The muscles felt stronger, and the pain went away. The pain felt like a it was in the skeletal system, not the muscles.
Anyway, I've been trying to do crunches but it seems after a very small number of reps my lower back is killing me. Any suggestions? Should I get this checked out, or is it just a matter of a weak lower back? Thanks

    get it checked first and then go from there, whats the point of training a problem area, will just make it worse

    as above mate

    but i had the same problem (but without your injury) so i stopped doin them on the matt and started doin leg raises etc on the dip bars, no more back pain but not as good as what u can do on the floor

    i used to get that too when i was doing sit ups and on one of those stomach cruncers- i now do leg raises and incline situps on a bench- no problems anymore
