You could try doing some ab crunches using a swiss ball, this protects the lower back whilst you perform the exercise and works all the stabilizers as you balance.

Perhaps you need to see a specialist to address your problem - nobody should have a 'bad back', or have to work around one.

Like PK said, are you doing any specific lower back work?

First of all as knighty says... if you have back problems then get them checked out. I'd be very interested in seeing the rest of your routine in detail...

First off thanks for replying,I have been to many an osteopath, its a muscle complaint in the lower portion of my back,it aches most of the day as does my bricking partners, but a dull ache and not really a strain, its as if when i come home the last thing my back wants is to do more bending, something to do with being bent over all day.
Ill tell you my routine and i know im going to come in for a bit of stick, because its not that professional.
this does vary as sometimes i dont want to do anything when i come home,so i work on something that i enjoy, working on the assumption somethings better than nothing.
    mon...chest 5-7 times 5 sets bench flat
    " " incline
    " " dumbells flat
    " " incline
Arms biceps 5 times 5 straight bar
    curl bar
    concentration curls
tues triceps skull crushers close grip
    also might do shoulder shrugs
thurs pretty much the same as mon.
and so on.i cycle most mornings normally 8 miles in 20 mins.and thats it.
hadnt thought of a swiss ball though angel, might give it a go if it supports the back.

    Hi there Daz,
Just wondered about this "muscle complaint" that has been diagnosed by the Osteopaths, have they ever actually x-rayed it or done an MRI scan? I only say this because it's very rare that you get muscle complaints that don't sort themselves out in the end, especialy with specialist advice. Also on a more personal level, i started having really bad back pain after doing stuff in the forces years ago, i put up with it for 4 years as i thought it was just perks of the job. In the end, and after many specialists had looked at it and said it was just lumbago or maybe muscular i persuaded them to get it x-rayed and hey presto......my spine had slipped at the bottom! This is something that although can't be fixed, i know exactly whats up with it and i can do certain exercises that help it.
One of the main things i'm always told to do by my comsultant is to keep the lower back muscles as strong as i can and also do plenty of core stabilisation exercises. One being the pelvic floor muscle type exercises as this helpd the inner corset abdominals and not just the ones that look cool on the beach!
But thats my experience and everyones is totaly individual. I think what i'm trying to say is if you have'nt had an x-ray yet....push to get one asap, at least then that will eliminate a whole load of other possibilities. Some doctors can be very quick sometimes to pass a condition off with an overall term. Best one thats used sometimes is "Oh you have an (IDKJ)...internal derangement of the knee joint. In other words you have something wrong with your knee but i have'nt got a bloody clue what it is so this name should cover it!

    Best of luck mate....

i think there is an article on t-mag.com called the war horse workout, or something, do a search for it, I'm pretty sure thats got info on planks and horse stance stuff.

J5 has a point about the osteopath, fair enough seeing one if you know you are all misaligned, otherwise I would see a physio if is neurological and or muscular.

There's no such thing as a 'bad back'...it's not a general condition, it's a specific injury that needs addressing accordingly.

All injuries are unique and should be treated with respect - GP's don't have a clue!
