I think you're asking whether people prefer to barbell press or dumbbell press.. Most will tell you they do both, I do more work with a barbell rather than with dumbbells..

    Current PB's
    100kg Clean & Jerk
    110kg Bench
    190kg Deadlift

Due to wrist injury I've started using dumbbells, preferring it to barbell pressing at the moment.

barbell press on decline bench press but dumbells on flat or incline bench press. reasons include better feel in pectorals and less shoulder niggles

Did we change the topic to Barbell vs Dumbell?

    OK barbell.

It's difficult to get really heavy dumbells into position.  So they are not suited to very high intensity chest or shoulder workouts.  Also anyone who works low reps/high weight needs to be able to gradually increment weight.  most gyms at best give you a 2.5kg increment in weight (usually 5kg increments from 35kg upwards).

On a bench I can both load up huge weights and also add tiny increments.  There's also the option of using chains and bands.

That being said, I still use dumbells after I'm done benching.

My latest thing is doing close grip Smith presses. The support is fantastic, it's also safer than a standard oly bench press and you get a Hell of a pump in the triceps. Love it.
