Best Man Speech

I've got this daunting job to do this summer...

Anyone got experience or advice?

Some questions that pop into my head are;

1) do you still have to try and be funny even if you're not and you're nervous about it?
2) how long does it have to be?
3) where do you draw the line in terms of taking the mickey out of the groom?
4) is it a good idea to try and think of something novel like props or poems etc?  Any reccomendations?

Cheers.

in terms of length.. i'v heard best man speaches anywhere from 2 minutes to about 10

i think jokes / taking the p1ss etc will depend on the type of guy the groom is

if you can find a good poem that really relates to the groom then that could be good yeah

my advice although ive never done it

    Keep it relatively short,
Take the mick but keep it relatively clean (there will be kids present)- it should be atleast slightly funny

props etc I would say no.

And in the end say how awesome the wifey is and how lucky BLANK is to have found her and hope they live happily ever after and have 9 beautiful children and raise a Yak

Groom stories should never allude to sexual antics with a former partner.

Was at a wedding last year where the best man joked about "all I saw, back when we were young, was **** driving by with a head bobbing up and down in his lap."

Kinda brought a deathly silence to the room.

Being funny is sort of requisite, I think.

One of the failings of many best-man speeches in my view, is over reliance on 'in-jokes' or reference to shared experiences that only a few of the assembled party will get. The best man really needs to include everyone in the fun.

Nobody likes a long one, alot of the time speechs are done before the food, and poeple are just hungry, so short N sweet.

    Congratulations
Talk about how good looking the bride and maids are
Little story about why your the best man
read any letters from people that coulnt be there
Make a toast the the lovely couple

Job done, I did it a couple years ago, was worried going to do it, but actually enjoyed it at the time.

I was a best man last year and Im going to be one again, hated it but I hated all the other crap that goes with it more.

I had plenty jokes in mine, but I had 1 in particular which brought the house down and after that it flew in. If you want I'll PM you mine.

It's in the delivery, too mate so you might want to practise on a few friends/partner first.

Public speaking is never easy if you're not used to it.

Strangely though, do it the once and it's a piece of pee for all events afterwards.

    Cheers for the replies everyone.

Forgot to mention, bit of an odd one but I'm sharing the best man duty with someone else.  Hoping that he'll be able to take the heat off a bit.

Maybe I'll leave him to tell jokes and I'll make a toast...  or maybe he's planning on doing this too.

Jindlay, would be cool if you could pm me a copy.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I used this book and found it useful:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk...;creativeASIN=184091369X

I did 10 mins but there were two of us but my speech went down better.

I did the first part, then the other guy told a few stories then I finished it off.

I thought I was going to pass out before I stood up to speak as I was so nervous but once I got my first laugh I was loving it.  Start with a joke and once you hear the laugh you will be ok.

I left out a few of the more risque jokes once I got up there as they didn't feel that appropriate once I was up there.

I didn't really tell stories, just short jokes about the groom, his job, uni, flatmates etc

Longer stories are a high risk because if the punchline doesn't pay off it takes a long time for the next one.  One liners give you more leeway for the odd duff joke as you will be onto the next one in no time.

There are some on youtube but they tend to use the same jokes which every body who has been to a wedding has heard before.

Good luck, its nerve wracking but once you've done it you can do any kind of presentation or speech in the future!

I like this thread, don't know why I haven't posted similar as I've the same task in Sep.  Could someone do me a template?  I'm a man of few words, was thinking of the region of 60secs or less with lots of "eh's"

Just say that mate...IM a man of few words so....

What I listed was the "have to do from the best man", but thats about it.

And if ya dont wanna do stories just say sommin like " ive too many stoires about X but I couldnt tell them here.....however if you find yoruself buying me a drink" blah blah blah...gets ya out of having to tell a tale.

10 minutes is plenty.Throw in a few amusing anecdotes about the groom.Keep it clean though. There will be kids there. No bad language or dirty jokes.Don't mention previous girlfriends.

Keep it short and sweet.Nobody wants to hear you waffle on for ages.
