Best carbs for post workout

Hi There,

I usual take 40g of Whey Protein Isolate 90% (Instantised) after my workouts mixed with water. I would like to add in some carbs in to this, can someone recomend which is best for this. It looks like the choice is Dextrose or Maltodextrin. Thanks

I'd say either, I personally use Maltodextrin but I know people who use a mixture of both.

As Gaz says, that should be fine.

Play around with amounts and types and see what suits you best, there's no blanket prescription.

Ok Thanks chaps, the dextrose seems cheaper so if both very similar then that will do. Also roughly how much do you need post W/O?

As Drew says, there is no set amount.

Some people like to gauge it on their workout before, i.e. if it was larger muscle groups, then you could have more, smaller muscles groups, then maybe have less.

I personally have a set amount no matter what i train.

See what works for you mate.

Again mate, it depends upon a lot of things. I would start arounbd 30g and work up from there. You'll need to eat a whole food meal 45-60 mins after though. Again the make up of this depends upon your 'big plan' as it were.

Yea sure, I normally have this at the gym and then within an hour have a "proper meal".

Thanks all good info, I can start from here.

    Thanks All

Drewsky - Is the PPWO meal to stablise blood sugars to avoid a crash, or is it just to get us even mopre carbs/protein in to help recovery etc.

    I ask this becausemy PWO shake is 60g carbs(30dext, 30malt) + 30g Whey.
I wait atleast an hour for my next meal (I dont want to hinder PWO shakes digestion - which is usualy taken on a empty stomach, or i try my best to by not eating 3-4hours before it).
So since PWO contains alot of carbs, i often wonder if i even need a PPWO meal, specially which high ammount of carbs in it.

    Thanks

Sometimes one, sometimes the other, it depends upon the person.

Remember the ppwo meal doesn't necessarily have to contain carbs. It all depends on the big scheme of things and how you have tailored what and why. If someone is prone to going hypo then they will need some 'slower' carbs and all smaller doses after training, this difference could be either in the pwo, ppwo or both.

Ah k, because i currently have 60g dextrose, 30g whey.
Then i follow it up with carbs in my PPWO meal and wondered "do i actually need this many carbs after 45minutes of weights... i can't of burnt THAT much energy".
So though i may lower them in the PPWO meal(or perhaps less in the shake would be a better idea, im not sure? thoughts?).

    Thanks

I assume you have it on it's own then ? because from what I've read mixing it with whey slows the rate that it is absorbed and negates any benefit it has over dextrose

I have Waxy Maize Starch with:

    3g Creatine mono
    2g Beta Alanine
    3g Leucine
    1g Glutamine
    0.5g Vit C

as soon as I complete the last rep of my last exercise. I get an instant hit. Bam, I'm done. Then by the time I drive home and almost ready for my whey (10-15 min drive home). The other added ingredients are insufficiently high to cause the WMS to slow down.
