Biceps Aching After Deadlift?

Hi guys,

Can somebody please explain why my biceps are aching after dead lifting?

Please see the video below, arms look locked and straight to me? Is it because I am using a mixed grip? It is mainly my right bicep aching (this hand faces outwards).

A little worried now as deads are part of my lower day (yesterday), and I trained my arms today in my upper workout while they were still store from the deads.

Please feel free to critique my form also. I know the top of my rounds when lowering, is this because the weight is too heavy?

Your arm may be straight but your biceps may be tensed anyway. It's normal with an underhand grip and usually not an issue, but if you find it's a problem for you then just don't use a mixed grip. Use straps if you can't hold the bar with a double overhand grip. Or you can switch hands between sets to distribute the load over both biceps.

What kind of ache?  Are you saying you have DOMs?  or is it something else?

Since you're pulling a lot weight from the floor you should expect to feel it in your biceps somewhat, I do deadlifts with both hands over, never notice much bicep soreness, perhaps you don't train frequently enough?

If you love something let it go,if it comes back to you it's yours,if it doesn't it never was.

I train them once a week. Thanks for the help guys. Do you think I should have a days gap between my upper (includes biceps) and lower days (includes deadlifts) ?

Hi mate,

You're pulling with slightly bent arms.

When you set up, your arms are straight, but just before you initiate the pull with your legs / back, your right arm flexes / closes up a few degrees (it does this on every rep).

Forget your biceps, this is very bad for your bicep tendons and is usually a shortcut to snap city.

Switching to double overhand (as suggested above) should fix this, as should actively contacting your triceps before you initiate the pull.

It's best to fix this issue now, as when the weights start getting heavy, you will be putting yourself at serious risk of detached bicep tendon.
A lot of muscle groups should be sore after deadlifting, but biceps are not one of them.

Good luck

Deadlifts are an excellent exercise (one of the best) however they are not really suited to bodybuilding, especialy in a split routine, try partial deadlifts (only bringing the bar down to your knees) you cant go as heavy but you keep all the stress on your back(why use your quads, hams n glutes for back?) all you are doing is giving your target muscles-erectae spinae, traps n rhomboids a break mid rep,and risking injury cos of extra weight

I had similar issues when using a over/underhand grip, I just stick with an overhand grip at all times on deadlifts. I don't lift crazy heavy so haven't had to use straps up to now.

Bit of an update - i tried double overhand last week and could only like 110kg for 1, rather than 130kg for 5 mixed. I done 130kg with straps double overhand in the end though.

Should I lower the weight and go without strap or higher weight and straps?

Completely down to what you want from the lift. No straps will strengthen your grip, straps will let you use more weight and train the rest of your body harder.

If you arms hurt, and you cannot solve, it just use straps.

I avoid straps. A strong dead grip allows me to do weighted pull ups.
