You're getting the hang of this volume theory now

Lol. I agree that progressive volume needs to increase to grow, but I still think it is more of a byproduct of progress rather than the direct cause of growth if that makes sense?

Finding new ways to continually 'shock' the system and improve with each approach is paramount.

Makes no sense at all LOL Progressive volume a byproduct of progress.... it's a progress in volume so it IS progress by definition..... progressive volume creates a new stimulus, a new demand, that new demand on the body (so long as it is within a 3-0RIR) will trigger an adaptive response in muscle growth. The new ways you seek to 'shock' (I hate that term BTW) are created by progressive increases in workload demands on the body.

Just when I thought you were on my page on this whole volume thing

I know what you are saying, getting bigger and stronger means you can do more volume hence is a byproduct of progression in your physique.... but that progression in your physique comes about by creating progressive demands upon it through overload increases.

What’s the Law in AU when it comes to roids??not like US hopefully?
Re your sleep pattern it’s all ****ed up due to shift work. Your circadian rhythm is out of wack which stalls your progres.
When I was doing nights my body was all over the place, I was putting fat and no muscle tissue. I was insulin resistant and in bad shape. Quit the job, started working days and am much much better. But I still don’t look like I lift lol
I’m tempted to go on test just like you, for the last 2 years I have some in my closed waiting, but due to little boy in the house I just don’t.
Remember that once you try it, you’ll love it 😉

Australia is even worse I believe. Not allowed to possess unless prescription.

I'm pretty good at managing my sleep TBH. I will go to bed at 7am, put the ears and eyes on and set my alarm to wake up at 3pm. Often I will sleep to the alarm goes off. The trouble is on days off I should be going to bed a little earlier to make up for the deficit coming off nights, but I don't and always get woken at 6am without fail by the gruesome twosome. Yes the rhythms are off but if I'm getting adequate sleep I can't see what impact that would have? Have you noticed any different in growth since doing days only?

And yes it's something I'd keep well hidden from kids. In fact I would not consider doing any of these supps or PCT until I've finished having kids (due to the effects they can have on unborn children,) but I've well and truly drawn a line there for the missus LOL.

Let me try to explain how I see it.

A cyclist could work on speed or endurance (ie. reps or weight.) Either way he will travel a distance (volume.) It's not the distance covered that promotes growth it's pushing the bloody pedal and varying the training! The distance is simply a byproduct of the training.

You just pointed out yourself that it's training within 3-0RIR (ie. varying the training/approach) that will trigger that adaptive approach. If volume was the direct cause of growth/progress we could all do a million reps of 10kg DBs and be massive!

You need to go away now and have a good long think of a decent analogy to explain this and we can finally crack the thick nut that is my head!

Good news though is that if I fooled you I must be on the right track.

I did not say training within 3-0RIR will trigger the adaptive response and you very well know it young man, I said the progressive training will do so, so long as it is with that 3-0 range of hardness. It is also very well documented that the resistance needs to be within a certain range of maximal loading capacity (1RM)

Here's a good analogy for you.

Say you lift 100kg for 15, 12, 10 reps 1 week. The next week you lift 102.5kg for 15, 12, 10 reps... you have introduced progressive overload and will therefore trigger a hypertrophic response. The week after that you lift 102.5 for 15, 13, 10, 8 reps, another week of increased volume that has again illicited a hypertrophic response in order to ensure the demands imposed upon the body can keep being met.

Let's say you have a small hatch back, you have a kid, you adapt by getting a 4 door saloon. You then have another kid and a dog... you adapt by getting an estate. You have 2 more kids... so you get a people carrier and finally get the snip and learn to stop shagging when drunk.

BTW, no fvcking clue what the cycling analogy means at all LOL not even got a clue what my one means either so take from that what you will

LMAO! And I thought that cycling one was great!

I've noticed a pattern with your explanations... it's like you are pumping away under the sheets for merry old england, generating that erotic swell and the promise of a full and complete explanation... only to withdraw right at the climax lol.

So are you working up to 3-0 RIR each set? or just at the end?

Basically I take from that explanation that progressive overload directly causes growth.*

*Not volume!

Nice work Brett. Some good volume on the chest and in 45 minutes bet you were feeling massive after.

Progressive overload is a progression in volume. Lifting 100kg for 40 total reps (4000kg in volume) and increasing to 110kg for 50 (5500kg in volume) will see a marked increase in volume thru progressive overload.

3-0RIR is a target for your training. You can have whole workouts for a whole week or 2 at 3RIR and so long as you increase the volume lifted between comparable workouts you will trigger a hypertrophic response. I progress from 3RIR up to 0RIR over the whole 10 week training cycle. No point training at 0RIR from day 1 as it hinders recovery and limits the scope for progressing in volume as you are already at maxmimal training intensity (the necessity of which is debatable) but training at 4 or 5RIR is too easy to actually tax the system in to needing to adapt and respond

Cheers bud! Still hard to fit warmup training and shower in a one hour lunch break though!

Id never be able to manage it in a lunch break! I'd still be sweating. I try to train in the mornings so I have the evenings to myself, but getting it in lunchtime would be ideall

I think we are playing semantics now... back to your egg and chickens lol.

I definitely see what you are saying though and can see why you picked up on me increasing a set here and there whilst preserving reps. So mission accomplished lol. And cheers.

I am off to bed now after a long night shift. Night all.

Lol I do sweat after. Helps that the plumbing sucks and a cold shower is the norm though, does go some way in reducing the sweat!

Have picked up a little niggle in my right forearm/wrist. Not sure if lifting related or RSI type injury from workstation. Just need to minimise activity on that wrist.

Day 4: (Back) Thu 03/01/19 2220-2305hrs
Cut Day #53

Pullups: (5 sets) #12 x5, #6 x5, BW +2.5kg x9, x7, x5, x5, x5 = 30 (+1)
Reverse Rows 4x8: (feet on bench) BW x5, +15kg x5 +26kg x8, 25kg x8, x8, x8 (+1kg first set, +1 25kg)
Standing Cable Low Rows: 4x10, #11 x10, x10, x10, x10 (+#1)
Kettlebell Squats: 16kg x20, x20, x20

Pullups felt tough at first but seemed to get into the groove. Added a rep second set. Reverse rows added 1kg for first set which generated some concern in the following sets, but matched all reps and added +1 in the end. Low rows intended to just do the first two sets with the extra plate, but they moved so well I carried on with confidence. Kettlebell squats added another set of 20 with quads cramping after. These have been good on the back so might keep these in long term with high reps. Out of time for stretching.

TTT - 45 mins.

Cheers!

Might be worth trying those KB squats with a heel raise once you start finding them getting easy

Or feed a band through the bell and stand on either end.

Or demand they get heavier bells!

Cheers mate. My only concern with that is the increase in depth, however small. At the moment I'm stopping just at parallel which was always my max limit prior to any sciatic woes. Not sure how heavy the kettlebells go, but I will add a bit more weight and then look at trying some machine squats and some hamstring work.

That's the plan anyway. Slowly slowly.
