Have you ever investigated flossing the sciatic nerve?

Funny you should mention that. Went to a physio finally and he recommended a very gentle version of flossing. I’d tried the seated variety before and it didn’t help. He said the difference is a gentle stroking as opposed to beating it with a hammer lol.

ANIMAL
Sciatic pain is not only caused by compression, could be a whole range of other things that set it off. Remeber that nerve runs from back all the way down your legs.

Yeah I need to start thinking of it as a rope. Any time I curl forward the rope becomes taught and irritated. I’m fine with twisting and hyoerextension but any forward flexion is out. Same with compression.

RAD#1
Do you do behind the neck or to the front pulldowns?

Still impressed your managing to workout with a dodgy back though

Lol @ picturing me on the bog

Always to the front mate. Shoulders never liked rear. Cheers bud.

Bah! Gym totty is sacred and should be regarded with admiration at all times!

Maybe all the leering is why we don’t have girls lol.

Feeling quite switched on tonight. Back not too bad either. Ready to take on the world!

PUSH: Wed 24/04/19 1010-1100hrs
Week 6

Bench Press:
50kg x5
70kg x5
90kg x3

102.5kg x8
90kg x9
90kg x6
90kg x5

Tricep Dips:
5kg x9
3kg x8
3kg x7
3kg x6

SLRs:
15kg x11
15kg x10
15kg x9

Cable Flyes: (L4)
8P x11
7P x11
7P x9
7P x7

Cable Incline Tricep Extension: (S6, L11)
8P x15
8P x12
8P x9

Lying Cable SLR: (L12)
3P x9
2P x12
2P x11

Bench starting well adding a rep to first two sets, but small rest periods meant I was struggling from there to break even. Dips fought hard to add +4 throughout. SLRs and flyes also trickled in a few reps. Careful with the back mounting the seat on Tri ext. I toyed with adding a touch of weight and in hindsight probably should have. Lots of new reps here. In contrast lying SLRs fighting hard for just one measily rep lol.

Working quicker tonight hitting just over 50 mins total.

Sciatica a little bitey after this session. I think it was Cable flyes in the bent over position perhaps using a bit too much body English. Good opportunity to try out some of these physio exercises later to see if it reduces pain.

Cheers!

I never used to train shoulders for years believing pressing would sort it. Since I reintroduced direct shoulder training (including rear delts) my shoulders are one of my better features.

So what are you saying? You think it's too much? I did give the smaller muscles one set less.

I would fleece whatever SLR volume you are doing on one or the other. The reason I don't do much specifically, especially compounds (niggles aside) is that mine are too dominant anyway. But get maximum work out of one, then you have something to switch up to and rotate into your session... that's how I would do it personally. I was just intrigued in the 2 different choices.

Fair enough. I do like mixing it up a little in the session though. 5-6 sets of SLRs get tedious quick. Plus, I do feel that the cable work is a stricter movement, so when fatigue sets in towards the end it's harder to cheat.

Nice volume of work for 50 mins there mate. What rest period you had between bench sets?

Cheers bud. I probably took more rest on bench than the rest of the session. No more than 2-3 mins per set though I estimate.

Actually watched the holy grail film a couple of weeks ago bloody funny as hell

What physio exercises you trying for lower back? I noticed a lot seem to revolve around strengthening the abs especially lower abs I did them a couple of years ago when I really messed my lower back up talking bed ridden p1ssing in a bottle type of fcuk up lol.Got to admit they worked but as normal ditched them when I felt better but have found since starting ab work its really helped take the pressure off lower back and helped keep sciatica calmer.

Strangely enough he said don't worry about the abs/core. As a lifter he said mine would be pretty . His view was that when the body is injured it will overuse larger/stronger muscles and leave others to atrophy. He identified weaknesses in my glutes and also my ability to tilt the pelvis forward and back without using my abs. So the exercises he gave me address these issues. The first is basically a half rep glute bridge, but with feet right next to your arse and focusing on using the glutes to move up and down. The second is the same position, which feet out a bit more, but then rock the pelvis back and forwards without using abs. Quite hard to do actually.

Then he gave me another one which is basically flossing the nerve whilst laying down using a band. He also pointed out I should stop all hamstring stretches, as my nerve becomes stretched long before my hamstring starts to stretch, hence why I'm so inflexible in this area.

I did the exercises last night and did notice some relief straight after. See if I can replicate it again tonight.

Swim 25/04/19

100m breaststroke warmup
4x 150m freestyle sprint
1x 300m freestyle
50m breaststroke cooldown

Tried something a little different tonight. In the style of HIIT I did 4 sets of 150m sprints. Tiring work. Decided to stop racing there and finish with a 300m swim, lest I end up swimming amongst chunks in the final laps.

Sounds like the guy really knows his stuff hopefully he will be able to make a dramatic difference to your sciatica and keep it at bay especially as your getting closer to the mass blast ,the fcukin last thing you need is for it to flare up and bloody ruin it.Funny he mentioned hamstrings as you know ham curls absolutely kill me off might drop these altogether for the time being.

Be good to see how you get on with these new exercises

Fingers crossed this works for you mate

A physio gelling you not worry about core strength when dealing with a back prob? Telling you as a lifter your would be ok? Did he ask you what you lift? What exercises you do?

That is not how the body works at all! Atrophy! Christ almighty , he just have loved throwing that word out. People in comas or astronauts in zero gravity have to worry about atrophied muscles.

Just playing devils advocate mate but some of these things don’t sound right to me...

Rad- cheers mate. He did sound quite convincing. The manager at the gym recommended him and says he works with some professional athletes too. Ultimately though it just comes down to rest I think.

Animal- they might not have been the exact words he used, but it’s what I took from the 45 minute consult. So probably just my poor understanding than anything lol. He did run through the exes I do and had me do some movements. He was even saying there is no reason why I couldn’t return to squatting and OHP pain free, but I didn’t like that idea. Once it’s better I want to keep it that way!

Finished nights this morning and had things to do at midday, so a little short on sleep. Forgot my bloody red bull too.

PULL & LEGS: Fri 26/04/19 1500-1620hrs
Week 6

Chinups:
BW -50kg x5
BW -25kg x5
BW x5

BW+10kg x10
BW+7.5kg x7
BW+5kg x6
BW x7
*keep feet behind, do not raise knees

BB Incline Lying U/H Narrow Row: (L5)
100kg x8
92.5kg x10
92.5kg x10
92.5kg x8
*knees on bench, shoulders supported

Assisted Pullups:
BW -25kg x8
BW -35kg x9
BW -45kg x9
BW -45kg x8
*wide grip and wide knees, ankles crossed

Seated Row Machine: (L9/L8/S7)
77.5kg x9
70kg x11
70kg x12
70kg x12
*knees neutral, looking up

Reverse Flyes: (L6)
55kg x13
55kg x12
*knees wide

Standing BB Curls:
35kg x13
30kg x13

Alt. Single Lying Leg Curls:
10kg x10
15kg x5

17.5kg x9
15kg x9
12.5kg x9

Seated Calf Raises:
55kg x12
45kg x14
45kg x12
45kg x12

Chins managed plus one rep on first and last sets, worked bloody hard for it though. Perhaps a little too much leg movement here as I tend to curl my trunk/legs up as I get fatigued, which annoyed the nerve today. Rows I think I finally found a non-aggravating position with legs right out behind me off the floor and shoulders on the bench. Felt weird though so filmed second set to see how it looked. Alright as it happens and managed +2 reps. Video below.

Assisted pullups lots more reps present as I didn’t do lat pulldowns like last time. +5 in fact. Seated rows not so much luck, pushing hard just to squeeze out two more. Reverse flyes and curls all saw an extra rep each set. For some reason leg curls and calves were a real challenge just to match reps. Very painful.

All completed in 1:20hrs.

Cheers!
