I don't do deadhangs but I do plenty of pullups... does that count?

I would say no. With pull ups you are stressing the muscle in order to complete the rep, whether that be arms, back or both. Deadhangs you literally just hang there, the only thing that you are working is your grip really. That is just my own perception by the way, not science based. I'm expecting Animal or DV to jump in any time soon to clarify why I am wrong lol.

I feel better after doing them, even if just a little better. If you were to do weighted ones it may help even more. I've even read somewhere that inverted hangs (hanging from a pull up bar from your feet) are supposed to work wonders for things like sciatica. I think it may have been Dorian Yates who was banging on about his 'inversion table' or some similar kind of contraption.

I would say they are definitely worth trying, just do it every evening before bed for a few weeks to see if they help. Only takes a couple of minutes.

How you find hip thrusters? Assume no sciatic niggle?

I would say your point is likely right, Homer. You aren't relaxing the muscles enough to get that decompression. Altho TBH I still find a deadhang not fully relaxing. I like to prop myself up on my forearms on a dip station and just let my lower body hang from there

With sciatica as im totally clueless is this a permanent issue that needs constant TLC/maintenance or is there an end in sight to 'cure' it? Im guessing not but curious... Could just google it but better asking someone with it

Yeah mate basically ongoing. Think of the discs between your vertebrae as tyres. One of my tyres has a bulge in it which is pressing on a nerve. If I bend or compress it the nerve is aggravated which makes the area swell causing pain. This ranges from tingling down the leg, burning or cold sensations, or my favourite -hot knives. If I avoid aggravating movements I can usually get to a point where day to day life has no pain at all.

Ouch, that sounds nasty.  You seem like you do a good job of managing it though.

I'll give it a whirl mate -I'm sure there is something I can hang from around the workplace. If I freak someone out even better!

These are actually alright. As long as I keep my torso dead straight only bending at the hips and not go so far down as to round the lower back it is good. I'm doing them quite slow as well to eliminate any bounce. Cracking exercise for a pert booty though.

It is mate. Have had it for about 15 years now. Despite this recent set back it's been quite good. Trouble is as I have a stretch of no pain I get overconfident and fvck it again though. Need to stick to the safe bets now.

Swim 12/02/19

So I finally got my arse in the pool at work. I was horrified at how unfit I am.

50m breaststroke warmup
10x 50m lengths (500m) freestyle
100m breaststroke cooldown

Had to take my asthma spray first time in over a year. Took it easy and stuck to resting between lengths. I was a strong swimmer as a kid but I definitely felt vulnerable in the deep end when I'd done a few laps. Hams also threatening to cramp up any minute. Was on edge the whole time. Didn't help I caught one of my bar$tard workmates sneaking in trying to steal my towel halfway through lol.

First session is always the worst though will only get easier from here.

swimming is just a battle of efficiency and working muscles that just aren't used to it. It's not necessarily a sign that you are unfit, you just are not an adapted swimmer.

Apparently swimming has a high member of asthmatic participants. Competatively speaking the number of asthma sufferers is huge by way of a comparison to the number there are in the general population

I seem to remember something about the controlled deep breathing during strokes teaches your body to use the air more efficiently. Makes sense really when you think about high altitude training and the like.

One thing is for sure my rear delts and lats were burning in a way I've not felt in the gym!

But yes I am very unfit mate I avoid cardio like the plague. Need to change this.

Wait, your work has a 50m pool!!!'
A few years back we had something like 4 in the entire country....

Regular pool sessions will help with your fitness and burn a fair few unwanted calories. Doesn't half fry the delts and lats though, especially the day after a back workout I promise you. Welcome to my world.

Just 25m. I'd swim out to the deep end then scuttle back to the shallow end for safety lol.

I have my pull session only 15 hours later so we will see how that goes.

25m is still bloody lovely for a work pool. With that and a works gym that you have, I would never go home.

I find pulling after swimming ok, the other way round though....

I know a long distance Cross Channel swimmer who weighs not far off 19 stone, and he is pretty bloody awesome to watch in action, everything about his motion screams power and efficency.

I am very lucky there. Job isn’t the most stimulating but the roster, penalties and fringe benefits are great!

For some reason my eyes were very sore and dry before I started work last night. 12 hours of screen time made it worse, so much so that my left eye is now super sensitive to light. When I go outside it instantly starts to water. I can’t watch tv or look at a screen. Phone I have to turn down to minimum brightness. Managed to get through this session but hopefully not so bloodshot tomorrow.

Pull w/legs: Wed 13/02/19 1415-1540hrs

Pullups:
-50kg/10P x5, -25kg/5P x5,
BW +2.5kg x10, x8, x5, x5, x4 = 32 (+3)

Chins:
BW x8, x6, x6, x4 = 24 (+2)

BB Incline Lying U/H Narrow Row: (L5/L3)
60kg x5, 85kg x3
102.5kg x6, x6, x6 (+3)

BB Incline Lying O/H Wide Row: (L5/L3)
82.5kg x6, x6, x6 (+1)

Concentration Curls:
20kg x10, x8 (-0)

Alt Single Leg Extension: (B4/L5/L12)
15kg x10, 20kg x10,
25kg x10, x10, x10 (+2kg)

Seated Calf Raises:
50kg x10, x10, x10 ()

First set of pullups felt surprisingly strong considering how i was feeling. I used the dipping chain to measure palms distance and I was a few inches wider at work gym, so have adopted that width now. Managed to claw back a few lost reps with dare I say it great form. Chins also strong gaining a few reps. UH rows adjusted warmup a touch and added a few reps. Also filmed last set of UH and first set of OH rows, as it still feels I’m not going high enough -but looks fine to me on review.

Few curls to finish off the bis and I was onto legs. Leg ext machine always differs from gym to gym so I tried my best to match the work setup. Doesn’t help when the plate increments are different lol. Still I’d expect my performance on a proper leg day to be different again so not too bothered. It says I added 2kg though so I’ll take it. Calves not sure if I did 2 or 3 sets last week. Decided 3 was a lucky number so went with it.

Time: 1:25hrs

Bit slower than last week but I can take my time when not restricted to lunch breaks!

Cheers!

Aw shucks! TBH I’m pumped to fvck there and I doubt they measure any different. Just less body fat so they pop more I think.

Cheers though!

Very strong workout bud especially for pct. Those pull-ups continue to improve.
Next quest, muscle-ups!
