Broadband users not getting the speeds they are paying for?

I'm sure a lot of members here will have heard about this but i wonder what you actually think about it - personally i'm surprised that it even makes the news.

Broadband rates 'not up to speed'

Now i find this annoying because although i have some sympathy with people assuming that an up to 8mbps service actually gives you that service - the whole system could be changed by simply giving people a choice of Bronze/Silver/Gold or Low/Medium/High packages instead of a service that implies something.

But the idea that there are people who are only getting 3.7mbps from their ISP when they are paying for an 8mbps just makes me laugh. I've just heard some dopey bloke on BBC Radio 1s News Bulletin moaning about it.

It's all to do with the length of line from your exchange to your house, and the equipment in the exchange. If you're not happy then switch to another provider and low and behold you'll get virtually the same service.

Is this really just a case of people not having a clue what they are actually paying for?

Awesome pic, but Tony you're not doing yourself many favours posting up tips on preventing the gag reflex and then a picture of a guy touching his toes - Ak

Basically the technology just isn't there and BT don't want to fork out upgrading the network unless people are demanding, as well as offering to pay for a better service. From a business point of view it has to pay otherwise the  shareholders get unhappy (and employees end up losing jobs).

I don't mind paying for the "best" speed they can get for me. What I do object to is having upgraded my package I'm now little better off than I was - just paying a lot more.

I've been with Tiscali for 4 years now, they actually gave me 2.2mbps when all I'd asked for was 1mb. An advisor told me it was simply an error and as such I've been still only paying the old 1mb rate. Recently I decided to upgrade to the 8mb package. This I did, successfully. However, I'm finding I'm only getting 3mb after it initially went up to 4mb. So I'm not noticing a difference at all and would have been better staying on 2.2mb!

The other major thing that needs sorting out is moving house. It's a nightmare and basically you have to wait up to 3 weeks for the broadband to start at your new address. I'd to go back to dial-up last year because of this and guess what?New Pc's don't come with dial-up modems as standard these days, so had to get one specially. Pain in the neck.

you maybe would understand if it happend to you,

your example says people ONLY getting 3.something when they pay for 8

i would be OVER THE MOON with 3mbps. I am on the same price package as people reciving 8mpbs and even some people that ONLY get 3mbps but MY area....512kbps.

Its pathetic that they dont offer a reduced rate to people in crap exchange areas

Having to go back to dial-up when I moved last year did make me appreciate any sort of broadband service. However I'm peeved that since I decided to upgrade I'm paying more and not getting any sort of benefit, crazy.

I've had it happen to me though - i just guess as i have an understanding of how it all works i don't expect too much.

When i'm ruler of the world i would make it so that things were less confusing, and make the ISP give a cheaper package for those who can only get the slowest of broadband speeds.

Till you all vote me in charge or i organise a coup you are all stuck.

    Viva la revolution!

The industry is also deregulated as much as possible - something most people wanted so we could have a winder choice and cheaper telecoms service.

Now the same folk are demanding it be controlled!

The speed quoted rarely is matched. It's not news.

They get away with it because they put 'up to 8Mb' in the adverts so could be anything from 0.1 to 8.

I thought that was because they can't guarantee any speed. Depends on line length as well as how many others are using it too.

I don't see the problem personally , the way I see it , I am paying for UP TO (<< important bit !!)  8Mb ,  therefore I will accept (although maybe not over the moon with , but thats not the point) anything ABOVE the lower price point  -  for example

If they say £5 for UP TO 512k
                          £10 for UP TO 8MB

....and I get 700kbps ,  then I accept that this falls into the £10 price bracket  -  if I got speeds of LESS than 512Kbps , then yes , I'd feel I deserve to be paying £5 rather than £10   -  thats just the way the cookie crumbles , a bit of reasearch before buying usually gives you an idea of what you are going to get.

What I DO have a problem with is the absolutely RIDICULOUS use of the word "Unlimited" by ISP's and Telco providers !
UNLIMITED means without limits -  how on earth , with all the PC regulation of everything these days anyone can be allowed to apply this word to blatantly limited services is an absolute joke , and someone NEEDS to step in and put a stop to it ,  I'd like to think it would be our own internal systems or government  , but it will probably be that nice EU lady whose name escapes me ... (the one who stomped on the mobile operaters for screwing us over roaming ? )

No, Not that Dr Z.  Please don't bother PM'ing me for 'Price Lists'  You have the wrong guy.

That's the problem with broadband through phone lines.

With cable I've always got near enough 100% of the speed, pretty much 24/7, had the odd failure here and there over the years, but overall it must have been 99.99% reliable.

I get over 9mb/s from my 10mb/s Virgin line...  The upload speed sucks though... Something like 350kb.

Really? Mine's only about 60 lol. It's not great for t0rrenting, need to seed things for a long time to get a good ratio. Or do you mean 350kbps? Which would be about 40KB/s...sounds about right, I think it's 512kbps officially.

No, people just don't have much of a clue:
