I think most of it from the UK is ordered from Glanbia in massive amounts (in our terms) and tailored to what spec they want the whey.

Any reps know what the other bulk suppliers use?
Having a discussion at the gym the other day and a few people get a bit of stomach discomfort from one of them (not going to start stirring it by revealing as it's a minor issue) but I wasn't sure if it would be the whey itself or maybe the flavourings? They are fine on the other bulk suppliers.

I know MP use Glanbia in some of their range

To the OP. With the possible exception of ONE (small really so not a bulk supplier at all) company which is part of the Glanbia corp NOT ONE supplement company that you'd have heard of does anything like enough business to warrant processing the levels needed. For all the whey consumed by us athletes it's a drop in the ocean compared to any food use and even more so baby feed.

One of the issues with MP (and not just them) has been growth vs restricted outputs from individual processing suppliers. To the point where they struggled, if briefly, to get all they wanted from one single (ideal) source. Ditto new start ups. So they use/d brokers. It means, with small variations in quality, taste etc, different suppliers for the same WPC etc

I had a meeting recently with one of the very big Dairies mainly because they are close to us . to give you some idea of scale they process in this one plant ( and it is not their biggest ) 40 juggernaut tankers of milk per hour and overall they are the biggest supplier of Whey Protein in the world ( so they tell me ) however non at all is sold to the sports nutrition market currently , Zippo . All goes to food and baby formula  market . They are just entering sports market which should be interesting ( hence their desire to talk to us as a local brand ) but as Steve says we ( the sports Nutrition market ) are a pimple on the ass of the world when it comes to overall whey production

Interesting. So most of it is from the same source and then tailored here in the UK with flavours etc?

There are 3 or 4 big dairies in the EU that supply most of the whey to the sports nutrition industry. They supply the raw material not the finished product.

But most brands do not even make the products they are sales & marketing companies that use a private label manufacturer to blend, flavour and pack the finished products..

I had visions of it being a very expensive company to set up. If you not putting the package togeather yourself cant be that costly to set up. Guessing advertising would be the big thing.

Yes the Arla plant down the road opened last year and cost £155m plus to build , sits on a 300 acre site and employs best part of 1000 people this is not a simple thing to do hence only a few large milk processors in the whole EU

No to launch a brand is not as expensive as to build a whey protein processing plant :)

But still a fair outlay to develop the products, purchase the products, build a web site, and as you say the marketing can be expensive..

I meant the to set up your own company like Mp or bulk powders. Not the actually plant that makes it.

Surely more suppliers cheaper protein? :)
