Bulking & carbs

Hi MT,

Does anybody here react unfavourably to a med-high intake of carbs when bulking? Med to high being in excess of 300g or so ED.

Im curious as it seems that over the last few weeks I have slowly taken myself from a 2200cals ed and 70-100g of carbs upto 3500cals ed and 350g carbs. Proteins and fat have remained constant. My midsection has balooned! Perhaps the extra water content is to blame? When i say balooned I dont mean gained/got fat, I mean I seem to have puffed out!

My midsection would just love to pear out!

Here is some samples taken from my training blog:

Would it be more the total calorie increase rather than carbs.

    Well could be Gaz,

im a little shaken at the moment as I have spent from the 21st May up until now adding in carbs Pre and post workout and some extra at lunch and breakfast whilst adding what would be 1,200 extra cals to what was a cutting diet. As said this was done gradually as to keep the risk of fat gain lower...

3500ed is chicken feed, I was losing weight until I got to the 3000 mark.

Could it be that the extra carbs are just holding more water and therefore bloating you out more or do you feel the increase in carbs has attributed to your gains.

Perhaps it is bloating yes. I havn't used creatine for a while either and have recently started supplementing with this again also..

Im hoping it is bloat. TBH a soggy midsection and a skinny upper torso runs in the family! I think ill run more cardio as I have been lax on this over the last 2 weeks and also be extra hot with my daily green tea etc..

    Ill see how it goes.

Thanks Gaz. Sometimes an e-slap is whats needed to pull me out of my stupor.

bulkin on low carbs is not going to happen

    bulk
    add weight

    cut
    lose weight

the half way house is not a good place to be

when you come off low carb diets, as gaz says water weight goes up...do not as a result try and cut them and still grow

    it will not happen

teh 'sut state' you were in before is a refelection of a de carbed state

carb up on normal daily calorie intake and you will look less cut if it contains the required carbs

if you want to look super ripped, get super ripped, carbs in or out and still looked ripped...if you want size accept the blurry abs...or stay small

no place beyond that IMO for seasoned trainers

    Hi Steve,

Hey who you callin small sonny . Sometimes im the biggest guy in my gym (hoping nobody relises I train at home some days).

On a more serious note, I agree with what you have typed. It is apparent from time to time I need a little psychological reasurance from an unbiased 3rd party to help me understand the situation.

I must admit Im a little taken back on how much water I must hold around the midrift in a carbed up state. Not seeing my abs is not paramount to me despite the way my previous posts were contexed.

Im in the halfway house atm as I have been gradually increasing kcals from CHO sources on a regular basis. I have now frozen at a robotic ammount of 3500ed. From here I will assess my composition on a weekly/possibly bi-weekly basis and using John Berardi's beautiful but basic Science link system, address any shotcoming in macros.

Thanks again for your time and knowledge.

    K

ahh the graveyard shift at the 24 hour gym on a saturday night/sunday morning then?

TBH people need carbs to grow
    taking them out is silly
drop your protein intake and balance calorie intake with additional carbs

350g of protein + 200g of carbs ED = 2200 cals (plus fat cals)
225g of protein + 325g of carbs = the same BUT IMO far more productive to add muscle and size

water is not fat and you cant stay de carbed for life

Does the water weight/retention eventually usually calm down after a while when u come off a low carb diet and starting bulking again?

hence why SKDs get office women excited only to find the actual initial weight loss is not 100% fat and when they re introduce CHO they kinda balloon a little
