Cannot copy large file off my SD card - help please?

I recorded about 15 mins of video onto a 2gb SD card via my digital camera.

I continued to record until the card was full.

I'm trying to transfer the file onto my XP laptop via drag & drop Windows Explorer...  it says copying.. - then finishes reasonably quickly and leaves a file on my PC with a size of 0 bytes.

Any ideas of how to copy this video over?  The video plays fine on my camera, so i'm presuming the SD card is still okay and not corrupt?

Do you think trying to copy the file over using a more powerful computer would help??

Cheers

This may be a silly question, but have you checked you have 2Gb free space on your laptop?

Are you dragging and dropping, have you tried actually right clicking and clicking Copy...then hitting Paste into the destination folder?

    Hi,

yes, - tried that, - exactly the same... - its says "copying" and the little display of two folders and pieces of paper being transfered comes up...  but the little blue progress bar never shows any progress whatsoever..... after about 2 minutes, - the display disapears and i'm left with the file in the destination folder weighing in at 0 bytes....

I will try tomorrow at work on a more powerful server to see if I get any more joy then...  - unless someone has a better idea :)

How are you transferring the data, do you have a card reader built into your laptop?  Or are you doing via a usb cable into the camera?

Hmmm dunno then.  I would see if you can transfer the file on your work PC, then if you can - this points at it being an issue with your laptop and will need further thought as to a resolve for that!

    Rubbish is'nt it?

The card is reporting that it's full, - but surely that should'nt make a difference.

Hopefully some more processing power will take care of this - as its a video I really do'nt want to lose.  And no, - it's not the sort of video you're thinking of either...

Yes - I thought of this actually :)

The card is 2gig.  the video file is 1.88 gig according to windows explorer.

There are 4 other photos on the card, - only I of which I didnt mind getting rid of, - I deleted that one photo, - still got the same problem.... - although, the camera is STILL saying that the card memory is full.. - so maybe I may need to delete 1 or more of the others... :(

Try runnig a disk check on the sd card, you could try importing the video file directly into a program like windows movie maker, try using a program like VirtualDub and then outputting what it can read to a new video file.

Mite be worth trying to copy the file via command prompt

for example if the external device is detected as e:\ drive and your file is called "vid1". you can copy it to your local c:z drive with -

    copy e:\vid1.mpg c:\

If you've got something like Acronis TrueImage you could try backing up the partition that is written on the sd card - there are options to do this reading at bit level if memory serves. I'll double check once i come in from the gym (sat on my netbook now between sets).

In fact i have just remembered even if you don't have it you can try a 15day trial of the software which works fully featured for that time www.acronis.com

the video on the camera. can you actually replay it on the camera, are you sure it's a complete file ? Perhaps due to the card getting full it wasnt able to create an eof marker.
