Chronicles of Bishop - One man's attempt to Join the X-Men :)

At the moment, I'm at work, so I'm just doing this at the moment to create a journal. When I have time I'll properly introduce myself, my goals and what I plan to achieve.

:)

This is what's in my welcome thread.

A long time lurker and I've recently rediscovered the forums.

I'm 32, married and with son and I've had brief affairs with the weight lifting room, The heaviest I've been was at 20 stone which was my wake up call that I needed to do something. I previously got down to about 16 stone but then with the whole preparing for a child, I neglected the diet and training and then went back up to 20 stone.

Therefore, this time has been different, I started being more serious with my diet and eat a good balanced diet and do a variety of exercises (Capoeira routines, swimming, biking) as well as hitting the gym 3/4 times a week.

This time has been quite good, since July 2010 till now, I've lost 66lbs (nearly 5 stones) and I don't think I doing it badly as I tend to average a 2lb a week loss and I've had diet breaks frequently throughout the journey. I plan to get down to abour 13 stone (only because I'm having surgery for gyno and to be on the list, I have to meet the NEAT guideline). Once that's done, I'm going to be working on putting on muscle.

It'll be good to know who else is near where I am (Herefordshire).

Favourite Weight Move: Deadlift
Favourite Move: Handstand Pushups
Interests: Capoeira, Photography (Would be very cool to get into fitness photography) and of course fitness :)

Not much today, today was an active rest day where I went shopping with the wife and son. We must have spent a total of 4-5 hours walking around the place so definitely a lot of good exercise. While not sunny, it is getting more spring like so that's all good.

Yesterday was a good day in terms of diet and exercise.

    Seated Curl and Press - 2x10 @ 16kg
    Lat Pull down - 2x12 @ 72.5kg
    BB Bent Over Rows - 2x10 @ 24kg
Side Bridge 2x45secs (Should have been 60secs) - Both sides.
10 of the best - 10-12 attempts at freestanding handstands

The gym was empty so I guess all the new year people had quit and that everyone was out on the town getting drunk and partying instead of working in the gym :).

    My goals

    • Get to about 12 stone - I'm currently @ 15 stone after losing 5 stone since July 2010
    • After getting down to 12 stone, get on the op list. While waiting for op date, start a lean bulk to build muscle.
    • Eventually do a modelling gig and get some stellar pictures when I'm all buff (do some with son as well) :)
    • Evaluate physique and tweak as needed.
    • Work on bodyweight stuff (planches L-Sits)
    • Do 10-20 freestanding handstand push ups
    • Become more fluid in my capoeira movements
    • Dress up as Riddick for Halloween (it's motivation to get buff by then  :)).
The gym that I'm in isn't the best as its quite small as it's part of the Halo leisure group. It has Matrix CV machines and some Life Fitness machines. The barbell is non existant as it is a part of a bodypump set and the weights only go up to 30kg. The dumbells go up to 26kg. Although in Hereford, it is the better equipped - Just not easy to go to at 7-8 in the afternoon :)

What else has happened since I've started losing weight - I've gone down from a 46" trousers and now wearing 36" trousers. I've gone from 17.5" neck and I'm around the 15.5-16" region. It feels good that I can shop in the 'normal' shops.

For those in the 12 stone range, what's it like trying to put on muscle when you're in the range? I know it sounds weird to ask that, but the last time I was there, I must have been about 14-15 years old

Yesterday would have been a gym day (At home) but I ended up doing gym like exercises from about 11am till 8pm. The wife and I were inheriting a former studio type extenstion on the house which houses a kitchen, so there was alot of cleaning to do.

The tasks I ended up doing were
    • Scrubbing cupboards and selves (Bics and tris - with a lil bit of elbow :)).
    • Carrying a TV (Crt style - felt and had to hold it like an atlas stone - It was like supersetting deadlifts with front squats).
    • Moving a fridge numerous times - Deadlifts
    • Moving suitcases from the cupboard up two long flight of stairs - Farmers walk supersetted with upright rows
    • Moving various equipment (CV, kitchen appliances) - Front lateral raises mixed with other bicep curl type exercises
    • Chasing the boy around trying to keep him out of trouble - Short bursts of Cardio :)
    • Moving a wardrobe from ground floor, up stairs to second landing - Deadlift again supersetted with finger grip (had to lift the wardrobe by its ledge aka with the finger tips).
Now I had to do some of those multiple times throughout the day, needless to say that I was knackered and tired. I also needed a good carb up and even had a couple of spoonfuls of chocolate trifle. *grin*.

Measured myself on the scale this morning and I've lost 3lbs since last week, strength is good in the gym which means that I'm now down to 15 stone 3lbs which is the lowest I've ever been in my adult life (that I can remember).

    In total, I've lost 67lbs.

I'll post some before and afters when I get home. I also need to check to see whether today is gym day. I do need to do some stretchs/mobility work as sometimes when I work, I can feel a slight twinge at the top of my thigh/leg. It's also evident that my range of motion sucks if I try to do a roundhouse type kick with my left leg so I need to work on the flexability.

Looking into getting into cooking, I fancy looking at Caribbean type food and seeing what they are usually made up off and see if I can do them in a healthy but tasty style.

Also looking to see how I can start fitness photography (Behind the camera for now). I think I'll be good at it. (Again, I'll post some past efforts when I get home).

No drugs, I wasn't exposed to your journal long enough to be affected :). Maybe over time :).

Thanks for the thanks, it's quite awe inspiring to see the different physiques on the body and I know that if I take it one day at a time, I'll get to that stage where I'm ripped and stronger.

Nothing much to report, more lifting with the housework although I brought a Heart rate monitor watch yesterday and I'm setting it up. About to use the strap and see if it can calculate my calories throughout the working day. It will be interesting if it can do that, it's a cheaper alternative then getting a fitbit :).

Gym tonight, the routine is going to be:

    Overhead Squat - 4x12
    Arnold Press - 4x12
    Rear Delt Raise - 4x12
Weighted Close Grip Push up - 4x12
Chin up - As many as I can do
    Standing Barbell Curls - 4x12
    Tricep Pushdown - 4x12

Breakfast -Porridge, Scrambled eggs with ham
Lunch - Left over Lasanga with Salad
Dinner - Some dish with sausages
    PWO Meal - Protein Shake

I ensure that I get a good balance of macros, the only thing I need to do is just up the protein a bit more as I tend to only get in around the low 100s.

Need to up the protein in there which I'll probably introduce later. Normally I have tuna with the eggs but forgot today. Other than that, I tend to come in around the 1400k to 1600k mark depending on what I'm doing. Today is going to be a higher cal day so I'll have more calorific food. I'm going for a larger deficit and then reduce it as I get closer and closer to my goal weight. In terms of muscle strength, it is still maintaining as I'm still going heavy in the gym, my recovery is good. I'm still tweaking but it's all good. I tend to cycle my calories with the weekends being more maintenance.

Who said that this was easy to understand :)

Just came back from the gym and managed to do the workout above except for the tricep push downs as it was been used so I did as many negative handstand push ups as I could before collapsing :)

Gym was semi empty, only 4 people there but it was 8.30ish so I imagine people are there before hand.

I did have sausages for dinner - 4 of them (peri peri flavour), 2 in a bun..Overload on the protein :)...Worked like an animal in the gym to make up for it though. The wife has got some spinach, I hear that it's good stuff.

I'll be doing some progress pictures tomorrow so I'll post them for you to see.
Note: When I do overhead squats, I swear I feel a twinge by the inside leg/thigh/groin area..Not to sure if my positioning is right. I have my feet pointing outwards as it seems natural that way.

    Overhead Squat - 4x12 (10kg, 15kg, 20kg, 30kg)
    Arnold Press - 4x12  (14kg)
    Rear Delt Raise - 4x12 (6kg)
Weighted Close Grip Push up - 4x12  (Had to do alot of stop start as it was harder than it looked)
Chin up - As many as I can do (subbed Handstand pushups)
    Standing Barbell Curls - 4x12  (30kg, 30kg, 20kg, 20kg)
Tricep Pushdown - 4x12 (Did Dips on the bike racks outside the gym).

Evening sir, thought I would check in and pay a return visit. Lots of good stuff here I see. Well done. And 20 to 15 stone is a massive success in my books.

Thanks - It's been easy at times and at other times a pain in the arse :)

I've done some pics so I'll post them once I can find a decent place to host them. I'll also post some of my fitness photography pics if anyone wants to have a look. I think I want to be part of the UK fitness scene, just not sure in what capacity.

I wonder if it's ok to pimp my canoe charity 13 mile trip that I'm doing later on in the year.

I'll write some more progressey type news later - Got to start work :)
P.S - What's the Reward points all about???

Reward points, ah yes that old chestnut. http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/tm.aspx?m=2949219 Personally I never worked out how to give them, but I am assigning stars to happy people every now and then.

What kind of fitness photography are you into? Theres some great weightlifting photography out there. You can see the focus and dedication mid flow. I only have to sit for 10 mins with my screensaver running and I am inspired to lift something.

Type of fitness photography - I don't know, I have a feeling that I would like to do the fitness glamour maybe or maybe concept fitness themes. It'll be cool to have someone (male or female) that was into modelling that wanted to experiment with pictures.

Basically it would be a case of showing off the person in the best light possible. I'll post some ideas of what I would like when I'm not on work's computer :)

Personal best today - 5 partial handstand pushups :)

After watching, I need to ensure that my arms/elbows are more in front to work the triceps. Didn't get to the gym today as I was putting son to bed and I was talking with my best mate who I hadn't caught up with for a while.

So I did some exercises around the house to make up for it

    • Kitchen corner dips
    • Pushups
    • Reverse Rows off the stairs + stair ledge
I do have to say that I'm enjoying reading everyones progress and it be cool to get to know you all :)

Just checking in  Just weighed myself and I've lost another 2lbs so I'm down to 15 stone 2lbs. Might be hitting the better equipped gym with the bigger range of weights and bench. So if that's the case, I'm going to do a routine of

    Bench
    Deadlifts
    Squats
    Military Press

Just so that I know what I'm capable of, then I can probably hit that gym once or twice a month to see how I'm progressing. Other than that, it's pretty good :)

Went for a 1.2 mile run yesterday and managed to do it in 12 minutes which isn't too bad again. Couldn't get to the gym as the boy took a while to get back to sleep. No worries if I'm going to hit the gym today. Hit it hard. :)

I'm typing this as my son is in his bed reading to himself and getting himself to sleep. I'm so tired today but it's been a good day and the weather has been nice.

So went to the better gym today while the wife and son went to the town and walked around the shop.

This gym is the better stocked one as it has more benches, Olympic bars, weights that go up to a decent level, cable machines, etc etc.

So my goal was to see how my strength levels were after not lifting for a long while at least a year and a half on the major compound lifts. The results are as follows:

I'm counting the bar as 20kg

    Deadlift: 10 @ 70kg, 10 @ 80kg, 5 @ 100kg
    Military Press: 10 @ 30kg, 10 @ 35kg, 10 @ 35kg
    Bench: 10 @ 30kg, 10 @ 60kg, 2 @ 70kg
Pullups: Could only do 1 and a half
    Freestanding Handstands: 8
    Handstand Negatives: 4

I also asked about Personal Training at the gym today and I think I'm going to go for it at some point. I think I'm going to go with the PT called Natalie Rouse - She's into competing and I think some people on the forum have meet her (I think Flick has) so it's always a good sign to get trained by someone in the community (even if I have no current goals of competing, I do want to get the best) :). That and I tend to do my homework/research.

Then I went shopping and looked at the farmers market (I love them - brought some chutneys) *yum yum*...

All in all a good day was had.
