Computer Help Please ! Windows Not Starting

First my new laptop and now my old desktop have died of a mystery illness. When I turn them on the black screen comes up telling me windows has failed to start successfully. It then counts down and tries angain but the same thing just happens again .It offers the option of starting windows normally or in safe mode. Neither of these option works either.

The laptop also says something about needing to read a disc or something but it's essentially the same issue.

I have no idea what has caused this. Both times it has happend after my son has been using them iirc. Could it be a virus or something from some crap he's been looking at ?

Any help would be great.

The exact same thing happened to both my laptop and desktop after the latest round of vista updates.

The way I got round it was, at boot time, you need to press the key to select the drive from which you are going to boot (its normally F8 or F10 but depends on the bios, just watch the writing at the bottom of the screen and hit Ctl+Alt+Del a few times until you get it).

When you get to the boot screen, just select to boot from your hard disk drive.

That cleared it up for me.

Try use the system restore so.

I think its F10 when the system is booting.

Try to restore to a recent image which worked correctly.

Yea f10 system restore, this will boot ur system to the last known working settings.

you will loose any files though (photos/vids/etc)

but you can get free software to help recover those files. (download.com)

Tried it on the laptop but nothing seems to be happening. I'm very reluctant to try  F10 on the desktop because we have tons of pics on there I'd be loathe to lose. I know you said I could get them back but I'd just rather not risk it just yet.

    Any other ideas ?

Boot from your original CD, then when prompted do to the recovery console, then type CHKDSK /P /R

Did that mate but it didn't have anywhere that I would type the code in you gave me. anyway it basically said it was fooked. It's under warranty anyway so the f*cking thing can go back. I cant be arsed with it anymore tonight but thanks for the help.

Do you have a recovery disc or a Windows CD.

A repair install could well help if you can't get to the recovery console as Plug suggested. Checking the disc as per his hint above will take 5mins of your time but may run for maybe an hour but should solve the problem if it's hard drive error related.

Definitely worth a try as it's less hassle than sending it back or getting it done under warranty - and to be honest the manufacturer might well suggest using a restore disc first anyway.

Awesome pic, but Tony you're not doing yourself many favours posting up tips on preventing the gag reflex and then a picture of a guy touching his toes - Ak
