Creatine, can you take too much?

I have just waiting to get back in the gym after a few months absence. Now most creatine I have looked at states 5g a day. My question is, that if I took 10g a day would it be more beneficial are am I just wasting it as my body can only absorb a certain amount?

It's difficult to say, I think everyone would be different.. I've heard a lot of people say anything over 5g's get's wasted, but surely it varies for someone who's 9 stone and for someone who's 19 stone..?

IMO It's cheap enough to not worry about exact measurements and the only downside to having too much would be frequent trips to the toilet!

5g per day is the sweet spot. you won't die if you take 10g but it won't increase your performance any, it'll just be a waste of money.

as creatine's probably the single most researched sports supplement, i'd go with the recommended dosage of 5g per day

As above, 10g isn't necessary imo.
Not mandatory time to take it really. Perhaps post workout with some simple carbs and protein shake.

10g a day is fine. If you want to speed up the process you could take 20g per day or more if your larger (the 20g 'loading' phase was based on a 70kg man)

^this but 10g will do you no harm, many studies using high doses for long periods with no adverse affects.

Friend of mine claimed it gave him the ****s once due to him confusing a table spoon with a tea spoon (he was loading on three tablespoons per day).

Yep that'd be too much. Plus we used to hear of too many daft sods not taking enough liquid with it and then complaining it caused them stomach problems. Well d'uh!!

The only issue with "overdosing" creatine is that it may cause some stress or discomort in your digestive tract.
Some users report this side effect and find that lowering the dose addresses this issue.

Exact dosing levels will be down to the individual.

i use a tea spoon pre and post workout, probably equates to around 10-15g.
Not probably needed in such quantity but its cheap as chips and water intake is always high so not a strain on the kidneys

I want to start creatine. What brands are good?

As Dylan says all the same really, any Creatine Monohydrate , not worth paying for expensive brands or Creatine Ethyl Ester etc.

Extra creatine is just excreted as creatine. It won't damage the kidneys

Creatine does not agree with me. The one and only time I took it made me enormously bloated and gave me severe palpitations. Scary stuff.
