Cruising.....

I'm fortunate to be going on a cruise holiday in May on the Independence of the Seas.

Although reviews tend to be good for this ship, Ive read plenty of horror stories surrounding horrendous queues, expensive drinks and a Butlins type atmosphere.

Can anyone offer their own experiences of going on this ship or have any general tips on how I can make the most of this holiday?

Drink is expensive on board mate. 7-9 dollars a drink depending on what you get.

A good tip I have is if your gf/wife/you are buying stuff in any of the on-board shops e.g. guess handbags/watches or similar then don't buy until the last day or two of the cruise as they discount the prices then. I 3 handbags onboard a few months back and would have saved 140 dollars or so if I had waited a few days. Also haggle in those shops as I found the prices are set in stone....

    1.)  That's a matter of opinion.
2.)  You don't spend several k going to Butlins.

never been on a cruise but some friends have, they said that you can save a fortune by pre-buying a drinks package with the tour operator so you could maybe look into that.

I used to work on cruise ships, i ran the gym on Celebrity Summit for 8 months and then on Freedom of the Seas which is Independance sister ship.  At the time it was the biggest in the world but i think Celebrity Solstice is now....
Anyhoo, the cruise holiday is one you'll either love or hate, i dont think there is a middle ground, on the one hand you get to see lots of amazing places but you only have a certain amount of time in each port so look into what is there and pre-plan what you're going to do.

As for prices well Royal Caribbean arent the cheapest but at the same time not the most expensive, i'm not sure if they do a pre booked drinks package but you will end up having to pay for drinks on board and $7 upwards sounds about right for beers, but if you or the mrs like cocktails or spirits be prepared to pay more.  The way it works will probably be one of two options.  Firstly you prepay on a card that you use like a credit card on board and when your out of credit you go and put more on at a machine or guest relations.  The second option is the one that stings alot of people as they cannot keep track of their spending, you get a card and everything is charged to it and you get a final bill at the end to settle before debark...

Personally i loved the lifestyle and the job, and the travelling was amazing, check the gym out, it will be fully equipped with resistance, heavy free weights and some hammer strength stuff if its like Freedom was.  Oh and theres some of that cardio crap too lol!  If you go to a seminar the guys will be working for Steiner, and will be trying to flog you detox packages, classes, PT etc..

All in all, keep an open mind but save up your pennies to really enjoy it and make the most of all that is on offer..

If you want to know anything else drop me a PM and i'll try and help as best i can..

I assume your food is included so make sure you always go to the evening dinner! Some people can be lazy and just go to the buffet as its handy! The food and menu in the dining rooms is breath taking every night!

    Helpful replies, thanks all.

I did want to book an all inclusive cruise initially but the wife insisted on this particular ship and all inclusive wasn't an option.

I'll investigate buying a drinks package up front and live off beans on toast for the next 8 weeks so I can afford to enjoy myself whilst on this money pit of a holiday.
