Cut from the beginning. Fresh start on page 7 after a 5 year hiatus...

After several years without doing much gym stuff or eating cleanly I am at a lifetime high weight. 3 years of uni drinking, little exercise and poor diet has taken it's toll! This is going to document my journey from fat to in shape.

This is my journal from about 4 years ago for those of you who may remember:    http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/tm.aspx?m=1918615&mpage=1&tree=true

Brief stats. I'm about 6ft/6ft1, weigh around 14stone, and am 23 in June.

I wrote this in a bit of a rush yesterday so as to get something down before I started today but since I have a bit of time now I'll add a bit more of a background. Basically as a teenager I was really active, played football a few times a week, basketball, tennis, you name it. Also competed in athletics and at my peak was running 6 miles a day everyday. Could literally get away with eating whatever I liked (in fact for breakfast I was known to eat 9 weetabix ) and lingered around 12.5 stone. Then I started to get injuries, firstly my ankles playing football and later I tore the cartillage and cruciate ligament in my knee, this happened not long before getting a moped and going from cycling everywhere to using that so I became lazy. Then I crashed my moped and broke my back leaving me in a wheelchair. When I left hospital I was 13.5 stone and felt fat, I lost a bit when I left and got down to around 12.5 stone again. Then I made my previous journal and was embarking on a bulk. Ended up being diagnosed as having a syrinx in my spine related to the accident before, this meant I couldn't train and also had the side affect of losing a lot of weight and I went down to about 11.5 stone. I had this operated on, spent a year at uni and put on a bit of weight and since then have only really intermittently been to the gym since. I got weighed back in september after 2 years at uni and weighed 14stone, and the reality hit home that I'd basically let myself get fat, eating crap and drinking too much. Now that my january exams are over I've decided to get on with it and lose the weight in time for my holiday in June :-)

My goal is to lose 1.5 stone by my holiday in the middle of June, precisely 3 months tomorrow, so that I can take my top off and not look a state lol! Antoher short term goal is April 15th, as I have a hospital appointment then so can be weighed. I was aiming for half a stone. I think my aims are realistic although I'm not that fussed about the weight so much as how I look, but I definitely have at least a stone and a half of flab to lose I think.

To achieve this I'm going to go on a cutting diet as well as starting at the gym again aiming initially to do atleast 3 cardio sessions a week and some weights sessions as well.

Here are some pics taken just now:

My diet will be roughly as follows:

Breakfast: 3 x poached eggs on wholemeal/seedy toasted bread.

Lunch: Jacket Potato with tuna in light mayo/chicken breast/salmon

Dinner: Steak/salmon/chicken with veg/salad.

Exercise will consist of the cardio as said, 3 x a week to begin with just to ease into it. 40/60 minutes on the handbike at the gym. Weights wise I was thinking bench press, wide grip pull ups, then the usual bicep curls/tricep extensions. Reverse flys for back.

One thing with the weights, I am paralysed from the chest down as a result of an accident back when I was 17 thus am limited in what I can do due to having no trunk muscles and thus having poor balance, so all dumbell stuff tends to have to be done one arm at a time other than the reverse flys as I lie across my lap.

Are my weight loss targets realistic? How would I look 1.5 stone lighter? Having my abs showing is always going to be tough due to the lack of stomach muscle control, this also tends to mean my belly is permanently relaxed so often looks worse than it actually is, how much would I need to lose to have some abs showing do you think?

All comments and advice much appreciated!

Will update with pics every couple of weeks to give an idea of my progress and will make sure to update with what I have eaten etc.

Thanks, Ryan.

    Thanks for the reply dude.

Plan for the day is to eat as per the diet outline above and to hit the gym for either weights or cardio later. If it's not too busy then I'll go for weights and perhaps a cardio session later on in the evening or tomorrow am.

So far today I ate scrambled eggs for breakfast, 3 large eggs, no milk or anything. Have no bread at the moment as monday is my shopping day but going to just ignore my body craving carbs until lunch when I'll have a jacket potato with tuna in light mayo. Going to make sure I eat the toast in the morning in future though as the eggs haven't even registered, I still feel hungry

    Cheers, Ryan.

Right so about to go and do my first gym session.

Thinking I will just do cardio as I have a dentist appointment at 6, for which I'll have to leave at 5.

Got a couple of questions, firstly regarding diet.

So far my day has gone:

9.30am: 3 eggs scrambled and microwaved.

1.30pm: Jacket potato with a little light olive spread and a tin of tuna with black pepper and a little light mayonnaise.

Then at around 4 I'm planning on an hours cardio but then I'm not likely to be able to eat my next meal until 7pm which was going to be steak with salad (lettuce, cherry tomatoes, Cucumber).

I bought some tinned sardines in tomato sauce, could I eat a tin of these on my way to the dentist at around 5pm to tide me over until the steak at 7? Without the tin of sardines am I eating enough anyway? I'm quite hungry already...

    Thanks, Ryan.

Good luck with it mate, look forward to seeing your progress.

Your diet looks to have some lengthy breaks between meals, maybe add some fruit or a handfull of nuts for example to tide you over.

Not sure the dentist will appreciate the sardine breath though tbf

Lmao, good point about the sardine breath!

Good shout with the nuts and fruit, the reason for the large gaps is being at uni and having lectures so not getting the chance to pop home and get any food but could take nuts and fruit in my bag. How about beef jerky as a healthy snack?

Also is it worth me ordering some whey for post workout shakes, would just be whey in water while on a cut?

    Cheers, Ryan.

Haha, cheers for the replies chaps.

I did actually put a post in the diet section before I made this journal, I'll give it a bump :-)

    http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/What-do-you-think-of-this-cutting-diet-m4362330.aspx

The gym was a bit of a fail earlier. Got there then by the time I'd signed up I only had about 35 minutes left for a quick blast on the handbike. Got upstairs and both were in use, waited a while but they didn't appear to be moving so just had to leave it in the end which sucked! So first gym session will be tomorrow instead.

Going to cook some salmon for dinner in a sec for my final meal of the day, eating it should be amusing though as my mouth is numb lol!

    Cheers, Ryan.

Right chaps, the first day ended up going a bit tits up

Basically all was going well, then after the dentist I was talked into going out. Drank 2 triple vodka's with water and squash in a pint glass, then one triple vodka and lemonade (would normally be lime and soda but they had no soda...) and a triple vodka with diet coke. Quite a lot but nothing compared to normal...

The worst bit was when we left my gf wanted to go for food and wanted indian, so I reluctantly go with. I ordered tandoori chicken on the bone with no rice or sauce as I figured it was the best thing for a bad situation. Then after dragging me to the indian when I didn't want to go anyway my gf decides she's not hungry and can't eat any of hers, cue me being mightily pissed off

I skipped breakfast to try and make up for it and am going to do 2 cardio sessions a day for the rest of the week to attempt to rectify it.

That will be the last time I eat on a night out and in future when I go out I think I'll stick to water...

    Cheers, Ryan.

Right so my punishment for last night is 50% complete for the day.

Did 40 minutes on the handbike between lectures, first gym work I've done in ages and the endorphines feel good :-) According to the machine I burned 272Kcal although how accurate that is I do not know as all it goes off of his age and weight...

Plan is another cv session this evening to go some way to compensating for last nights damage :-D Although if it isn't too busy I may take advantage of the opportunity to do some weights although I am not holding my breath!

Really need to get some kind of plan together with regards to the weights so look out for a post in the traning forum :D

Oh, I also made fundemental error number 2, snacking on jerky between lectures/meals while my jaw still kills from the previous evenings dental work lol, hard work to chew!

Diet today hasn't really got going properly but I'm not hungry atleast.

Missed breakdast but had a chicken salad sandwich at about 11.40am. It was 422Kcals 25g protein 40g carbs and around 18g fat I think. Read the packet to find the best option. It was wholemeal bread with little dressing.

To follow that up I am presently eating jerky, then the plan is salmon with a salad when I get home at 5. Then I will see how hungry I am PWO later, if I have a hard weights session then I may have a steak with veg.

Hopefully by the end of the week I'll have a routine sorted with both diet and exercise!

It's definitely helping planning/recording things in here witht he motivation!

    Thanks for reading!

    Ryan.

Temptation can be a terrible thing mate, & skipping meals won't make up for anything, it'll just make you hungrier. Just put it down to experience, your cardio work will go well to burn off some of the previous days naughty stuff, and then just carry on as a normal day.

That's true with the skipping meals, although fortunately the dodgy stomach/hangover seems to have supressed my appetite some what, although it could be the drinking lots of water.

May grab some nuts en route to my 4pm lecture as I am getting a little peckish now with all this talk of food lol!

What nuts would be best? Just unsalted mixed nuts? How many grams roughly would be ok to snack on? Will just be to tide me over until I get home, although I could probably stick it out until 5, just not sure that it's a good idea to let yourself get painfully hungry...

I just get a big pack of the mixed nuts and fruit at the supermarket mate and just have a small handfull in a little pot that I take to work, not too sure on the grams to be honest, I usually have those as an 11am snack, and they see me through to lunch at 12:30ish.

Re:Cut from the beginning with pics. 2011/03/15 18:25:15 (permalink)
Right so just ate steak and a salad.

    Diet today was:

    11.30am Chicken salad sandwich (25g protein/45g carbs)

3pm 1 pack of beef jerky (sweet and hot flavour)

4pm Roughly 40g of mixed nuts and raisins.

5pm Small glass of orange juice.

5.45pm 320g (precooked weight) ish rump steak (medium rare, prefer rare but didn't quite get it right :D) with salad (Lettuce, 4 x cherry tomatoes, diced cucumber).

Now I'm not sure whether to hit the gym again today or not. I've done one 40 minute cardio session already and a lot more trekking around than I would normally and I fear if I do more cardio I'm going to be hungry again after... any opinions? Chances are I will probably get hungry later anyway but if I haven't done the cardio then I'll feel I don't have any justification for eating. Also I feel like I could go to sleep for a couple of hours now as it is lol!

Tomorrow the plan is to get up early and hit the gym, either weights or cardio at 8/9am. I then have tennis in the afternoon for an hour so that's another cardio session. Then planned weights/cardio in the evening but might skip that session as I don't want to over do it as I have made that mistake in the past.

Still think the diet needs tweaking but I'm anxious of overeating as I'm on a tight timescale so don't want to waste time maintaining weight. I did get a little lightheaded earlier though, just before eating the nuts while trekking up a steep hill lol...

Ahh how I've missed endorphines, sure I can still feel them pumping around my body :D

    Thanks, Ryan.
